Sightseeing & Hiking

A peaceful port village, located on the shores of Isthmus bay. Surrounded by beautiful limestone cliffs which, when viewed from Georgian Bay, resemble the head of a lion, giving Lion's Head it's name. Fun Fact: Lion's Head is located at the 45th parallel, exactly halfway between the equator and the north pole. Bayside Astronomy has a free program on Friday and Saturday night's throughout July & August at the Peninsula Observatory Deck (next to the Marina). The Bruce Peninsula, a dark sky community, has some of the darkest skies in southern Ontario allowing you to see the Milky Way blanket the sky. If Friday and Saturdays don't work, their celestial tours runs on other dates in the Bruce Peninsula. Check the About section on their Facebook page (Bayside Astronomy) for more details. Below are some ideas listed below. For more details on each attraction listed below, see the individual sections created within the guidebook. 1. Lion's Head Lookout 2. Lion's Head Beach 3. Greig's Caves 4. Black Creek Provincial Park *DO bring good walking/hiking shoes if you are exploring the trails.*

The largest of the Bruce Peninsula’s flowerpot formations and one of the many spectacular places along the craggy shoreline known for incredible views. This large inland flowerpot or stack was formed by wave action from a post-glacial lake 5,500 years ago. The walk to the Devil’s Monument is actually quite short, but the access trail is steep, rocky and slippery. The hiking is not too difficult, but it’s not a good place to take young children. Bring sturdy footwear, a walking stick and watch out for poison ivy – easy to avoid if you know what it looks like. DO: Take the trail and stairs down to the gorgeous rocky beach. You may want to bring a picnic, bathing suit and swim shoes if it’s a hot day and the clear water beckons. The shallow bay water warms up in summer. Park at the Bruce Trail lot near the end or Borchardt Road. The Minhinnick Side Trail will take you around and back to your car.

The entire journey from start to finish to Flowerpot Island is well worth it. Great for the whole family! The island is famous for its natural "flowerpot" rock pillars, caves, historic light station and rare plants. Most visitors take a tour boat from the town of Tobermory to spend a half or full day on the island hiking the trails, viewing the scenery, picnicking or swimming. Bring sturdy footwear and water! The Glass Bottom Tour of Shipwrecks on your way to explore Flowerpot Island is well worth it! For a little excitement on your way back to Tobermory, I recommend taking the speedboat. The kids love it, they may get a little wet but it's perfect on hot summer day!

Easy, short hike to the caves. Bruce's Caves Conservation Area derives its greatest significance from the unique cave formations found along the escarpment face. These caves were formed by the wave action of post-glacial Lake Algonquin, 7,000 to 8,000 years ago. Bruce's Caves Conservation area consists of: 7 hectares of Niagara Escarpment and rock talus, upland hardwoods, wooded swamp, caves and access to the Bruce Trail.

"Self-guided exploration of 10 limestone caves in the peace and tranquility of singing birds and rustling leaves all in about a hour or two. Must wear hiking shoes with a good tread, as the rocks may be moist and slippery. You will also need a flashlight for some parts of the caves. Binoculars will be a good idea to get a better view from the trail above the caves that affords breathtaking views about 300 feet above the sparkling waters of Georgian Bay. Very important also is to have comfortable clothing when climbing around the caves." "Please be advised that when exploring Greig’s Caves, you travel the property at your own risk." "Unfortunately, due to the steep inclines and rocky terrain, the caves are not accessible for a person with mobility impairment or physical challenges. The hike does require some physical agility and balance."

Located in Lion's Head Provincial Nature Preserve, you will be looking out over beautiful turquoise blue waters from 200 foot cliffs. You will have some of the best views on the Bruce here! Hike to Williams Cave and the Bannister Hill Loop Side Trail (1 km hike) where there are a variety of lookouts and escarpment views. Keep your eye out along the trail and on the face of the escarpment, where you will see many glacial pot holes. They may be filled with rock or sheared off, but there are plenty to be found! *Not suitable for children *Bring good walking/hiking shoes *Walking sticks can be helpful on some of the challenging parts of the trail.

"The Grotto at the Bruce Peninsula National Park is the largest and most outstanding, not to mention the most popular. It is a bottomless pit, cupping the turquoise sun-bright water of Georgian Bay, inviting a refreshing swim on a calm summer day." DO: You need to book your 4-hour parking spot in advance for the park. It fills up quickly during the summer and to avoid disappointment, it's always a good idea to plan ahead. DO: Bring good walking/hiking shoes. Visiting in the spring, fall and winter are also options. It's beautiful all year round!
