Food Scene

Strangely not open on Sundays, but open 24 hours otherwise (takeout only at late night), this is a classic diner with a terrific neighborhood feel (a lot of regulars), a really sweet, attentive staff, and some truly good menu items. Nothing's gourmet, of course, but I'd say chances are you can have a very satisfying meal. You definitely can't go wrong, in my opinion, with the stir-fries (as in: really really good), the Noni's classic salad (or anything involving pieces of their grilled chicken), or the burgers. Watch out for "steamed vegetables" - often this just means a pile of corn.

Great coffee, a friendly staff, outstanding (and unique!) pastries, clean and classy, unpretentious, wifi, and even basic office supplies and a printer!

Mostly a takeout joint (part of a local chain of 4) with a few sit-down spots, this has become a Detroit classic, and is a very unique and insanely delicious blend of Romanian, Middle Eastern, and fast food. All of the wraps are amazing, also the stuffed pepper, the hot stuffed grape leaves, and the falafel quesadilla. Sides of hummus and garlic sauce are an absolute must.

75 years old, run by the same family that founded it (almost all women, as well), it is the uncontested crown jewel of donut places in the area. Open 24 hours, but go early or late at night to snap up the best stuff, still warm. My personal favorites are the blueberry sourdough donuts, and the glazed donut holes, but all the basics are there (no apple fritters, unfortunately) and are always undeniably the best. A remarkably diverse clientele (as in, Birmingham old money, neighborhood families, hipsters, and the homeless) is evidence that this place is the real deal. Whatever that means.
