I grew up going to Second Avenue Deli—an old-school Jewish deli-meets-diner. I get their matzoh ball soup, pastrami sandwich, and a side of gribenes—chicken fat cracklings, the most unhealthy thing you can eat—with onions on top. Your server brings you a chocolate shot along with the check, a familiar practice at some delis. This is the only deli in New York that sells ptcha, jellied calves’ feet. It sounds gross. It’s grey and it jiggles and it looks terrible—but it’s really tasty. I tried to sell it at my shop, unsuccessfully. People look at it like, “What the eff is that?”

I opened my Brooklyn deli as the place to go for all kinds of smoked fish. I’ve since expanded, and now we serve traditional deli fare.
