The Temple of (Athena) Aphaia is located in Aegina, in the sanctuary dedicated to the homonymous deity. It is located at a height of 160 meters on the east side of the island. The sanctuary is also located about 29 kilometers southwest of the Acropolis of Athens.

The Temple of Aphaea is on the most well-preserved ancient temples in Greece. The Temple of Aphaia in Aegina was built later on the hill rising above Agia Marina. The goddess Aphaia (meaning "invisible") was only worshiped in Aegina and the practice had begun in prehistory. The temple, however, became an important, symbolic centre of Greece. The temple itself is an incomparable example of ancient Greek architecture from a technical, artistic, geometrical and physical standpoint. It rises proudly to dominate the peak of the Aegina mountain range, as it has done since the 8th century BC. The temple was built at an equal distance from the Parthenon in Athens and the Temple of Poseidon in Sounion to form an equilateral triangle (the golden triangle of antiquity). No structures predating the temple (built on a rise in the north-eastern part of the island about 15 km from the town of Aegina) have been found in the area. The oldest structures date to the 8th century BC. A major fire in 510 BC destroyed the roof of the early Doric temple to the extent that the Aeginetans decided to tear it down, keeping only the entrance and the large altar. It was rebuilt to an even more glorious state later and decorated with sculptures of the Aeginetan School. The temple took its final form in 500 BC, and no further additions were made.

One of the most delightful Doric temples of Greece. Located atop the pine-clad Mesagro hill of the northeast end of the island. Encircled by excellent views of the Saronic Gulf and surrounding area. Aphaia was a Greek goddess Excavations shows that the hill was used as a place of worship since the Bronze Age. The first architectural elements were erected on site in the 7th century BCE.

The jewel in the crown of Aegina island. Whether or not you are especially interested in history and archaeology, failure to visit this outstanding monument would be a great pity. It is a stunning example of ancient architecture set in a beautiful natural forested area with sensational views across the island to the sea.
