A medieval Orthodox Christian cave monastery complex with beautiful mosaics and frescoes in a reserved forest. Cool souvenirs and eating. We can organize a half-day trip for you if you choose so!

The peculiar name of this rock monastery comes from Persian/Arabic and means “colorful”. It’s one of the most popular things to see near Varna and for a reason. Built in the 13-14th centuries, the monastery gave shelter to hermit monks. Aladzha monastery has a few different floors and sometimes on a summer evening, you can even catch a great light show! After you’ve explored its main part, we recommend that you take the little path to the left of the entrance (next to the museum) and walk about 10 minutes on it. You’ll reach a necropolis to your right which is so, so gorgeous and not that popular.

Aladzha Monastery is the most popular medieval rock monastery at the Bulgarian Black Sea coast, which was inhabited by monks- hermits in the 13th – 14th century. Systematic research of this Christian monument was initiated in the late 19th century by two of the founders of Bulgarian archeology – the brothers Karel and Hermin Shkorpil. In 1912, the Aladzha monastery was granted the title of "national historical monument" and in 1968 - an architectural monument of national importance.

The Aladzha Monastery was created approx. 12th-13th century, but was abandoned in the late XV and early XVI centuries. [1] For the first time the name of the monastery is mentioned in the book of Russian writer Viktor Tepliyakov Letters from Bulgaria (1832). The first systematic studies were carried out at the end of the 19th century by the Hermenegild and Karel Shkorpil brothers. In 1912 it was declared a folk old age, and in 1957 it was a monument of culture of national importance
