There are many mountains around the lake to climb (or ascend in the comfort of a train, funicular or gondola), but we're partial to the Niesen, the pyramid-shaped mountain that towers above Spiez. It's been painted by illustrious 19th and 20th century artists including Paul Klee and Ferdinand Hodler. We love the view from the top, and recommend the excellent breakfast served in the summit restaurant. It's only ten-minutes by car or train to Mülenen - where the funicular begins its 30-minute climb to the top as well as the start of the footpath. Hiking up the trail is well worth it if you're fit and used to walking in the mountains. It's signposted as a 4-5 hour walk. Other nearby mountains where you can reach the top by cable car are the Niederhorn (northshore of lake) and the Stockhorn (southside, but starting from the village of Erlenbach in the Simmental valley). --- Rund um den See gibt es viele Berge zu erklimmen, wer nicht wandern will kann die Gipfel bequem mit der Bergbahn, Standseilbahn, Luftseilbahn oder Gondelbahn erreichen. Aber jetzt zum Niesen, dem pyramidenförmigen Hausberg von Spiez. Seine Silhouette hat bereits im 19. und 20. Jahrhundert bedeutende Künstler wie Paul Klee und Ferdinand Hodler inspiriert, den Berg auf der Leinwand zu verewigen. Wir lieben die Aussicht von oben und empfehlen das ausgezeichnete Frühstück im Gipfel-Restaurant. Mit dem Auto oder dem Zug sind es nur zehn Minuten nach Mülenen - dort ist die Talstation der Standseilbahn sowie der Beginn des Wanderweges auf den Gipfel. Die Bahnfahrt dauert 30 Minuten. Der recht steile Aufstieg zu Fuss ist ein Erlebnis für gewohnte und fite Bergwanderer. Allenfalls die rund 4-5-stündige Wanderung verkürzen und erst ab der Mittelstation loslaufen. Weitere nahegelegene Berge, wo man mit der Seilbahn den Gipfel erreichen kann, sind das Niederhorn (Nordküste des Sees) und das Stockhorn (Südseite, ab dem Dorf Erlenbach im Simmental).
