This 50-foot waterfall is reached via a 4.5 mile out-and-back trek that follows a shaded babbling creek down into a wooded canyon. Adventure Pass required.

There's a million hikes in the mountains above LA—aka Angeles National Forest. They're a short ~30 minute drive from downtown and rise to over 8,000 feet. This is a short hike through a gorgeous canyon that leads you to a waterfall (in winter/spring). Bring plenty of water—there's a section without much shade and some elevation climb. I've hiked it with my 4-year-old niece. PS—buy an Adventure Pass at the Native American museum on Hwy 2. if you'd like to park in the convenient parking lot.

A quick 45-60 minute drive from the cottage (depending on the day and if you time it right 😉) you can see some beautiful LA forestry. Traverse the rock creek and end with a picnic at a quaint waterfall. Out to the fall and back is about a 6 mile hike.

If you want to head up into the mountains, this is a great hike. The drive brings you up windy Angeles Crest Highway. It's about a 30 minute drive if you venture out early. The hike is through mid-elevation pine forest (1.5 miles to Switzer Falls). If you keep hiking along the ridge above the falls, you'll get to an intersection. One of the signs says "Altadena - 18 miles" (or maybe it's 16). Altadena is where Eaton Canyon is and is the town just north of Pasadena. So, yes, you could walk all the way up into the mountains, which becomes apparent once you notice that this amazing forest is in eye-shot of your guest suite in Montecito Heights.
