The biggest draw at Dover Castle is the secret wartime tunnels. The claustrophobic chalky passageways were excavated during the Napoleonic Wars and then expanded to house a command post and hospital in WWII. The highly enjoyable 50-minute guided tour (every 20 minutes, included in the ticket price) tells the story of one of Britain’s most famous wartime operations, code-named Dynamo, which was directed from here in 1940 and saw hundreds of thousands of men evacuated from the beaches at Dunkirk.

The Wartime Tunnels at Dover Castle provided privacy from prying eyes and protection from enemy fire, the tunnels under Dover Castle have served a strategic military role from Napoleonic times. Using artefacts, interactive elements, moving real life stories, striking images and original wartime film footage this new exhibition traces the history of the tunnels across the centuries. Highly educational but absolutely fascinating, with some potentially upsetting content, like a box of fragments from Nagaskai and Hiroshima, but these can fairly easily be passed by.

On the surface Dover Castle is England’s largest castle, defending the Kent coastline from invaders since 1066. But below ground it has another hidden side. Deep inside the chalk rocks that make up the White Cliffs of Dover are three miles of underground tunnels that have played their own – more mysterious – part in defending the country. As part of my road trip through White Cliffs Country I took a look around the castle’s medieval Great Tower and Anglo-Saxon church. But it was the sign pointing to the ‘Secret Wartime Tunnels’ that caught my eye.
