The exact date that the castle was built is not known. The walls are of ashlar stone and form resembles the walls of Cretan castles. The Venetian castle is located at Bohali hill, just 2 km away from the city. The Castle has great historical importance as it was built during Medieval years and was located the capital of the island. The location of the castle is unique because you can enjoy the panoramic view of the island from all sides. Also walking through the castle you can see the few buildings that are still intact, there is the stone vaulted prison, the large and small gunpowder rooms, the main bastion of the fort with a great view of Zakynthos town, the ruins of many churches from the 15th and 17th century and also the remains of the administration centre of the barracks from the period of British occupation.

On the hill of Bohali above Zakynthos Town, there is the Venetian Castle. As excavations have shown, this castle was constructed on the site of the ancient acropolis of the island and also on the site of a former Byzantine castle.
