Driving to the northern tip of Awhitu peninsula you will discover the historic Manukau Heads Lighthouse. The restored lighthouse overlooks the roiling and moody waters across to Huia and the Waitakere ranges. Learn about the history of New Zealand’s worst maritime disaster, the sinking of the Orpheus, which occurred on the bar just outside the channel below the lighthouse. Looking inland to your right across the Manukau Harbour is Auckland, and the Skytower can easily be seen on most days. Also, you can access the restored historic trail to the right of the car park below the lighthouse. A visit to the Manukau Heads Lighthouse will not disappoint.

Manukau Heads Lighthouse, located on the south side of Auckland, is over 140 years old. Relive the life of a seaman, viewing the vast Manukau Bar, Paratutae, Auckland’s Waitakere Ranges, Auckland City, and all of Manukau Harbour and Mount Taranaki to the south. The Lighthouse and surrounds are full of history incl the site of NZ’s greatest maritime disaster when HMS Orpheus ran aground the Manukau Bar in 1863 and lost 189 lives. Orua Bay was the biggest local settlement and most of the residents assisted in rescue and relief during treacherous conditions. Orpheus Rock is the best local fishing spot in Orua Bay; named after the spot where locals’ signaled for help during the Orpheus rescue.
