The enchanting remote hillside is dotted with the remains of a Byzantine village. More than 30 surging churches punctuate the rocky heights of the original Cita bell and several have been refurbished. They are linked by a network of paths, carpeted with flowers in spring. The ancient town of Paleohora was Aegina's capital from the 9th century through the medieval period and was only abandoned during the 1820s.

A medieval village of Aegina built in the 9th century; it was the capital of the island until 1826. Today, only 38 basilicas are preserved; few of them in good condition, they are worth visiting for their history and the frescoes preserved up to today. One will also find ruins from the old fortification and water reservoirs of the town. Do not omit climbing up the hill where you can see the traces of Castle (built by the Venetians in 1654) and also enjoy the view of the island’s other side. Wear good hiking shoes and make sure to go early in the morning during summer months due to the heat.

On the steep hill adjacent to the church and monastery of Agios Nektarios is located Aegina's version of Mystras - Paleachora, which means literally, "Old Town" and which was for a millennium (9th century - early 19th century AD ) the island capital. The setting itself is magnificent, especially in spring , when all vegetation is a brilliant green both on the hill and in the valley below, seen in panoramic splendor from high above. All that remains of this hill village with its castle are its churches, rumored to number 365 - one for every day of the year - though this figure is unsupported by research. Of the 70 churches whose existence on the hill are confirmed, 33 churches remain and are open to visitors. Five have been restored and are in good condition, though most remain in great need of restoration. IN THE GUEST HOUSE there is a guide book about PALEOCHORE with paintings and photographs of the churches. Text and notes are in both Greek and English.

The location of the ancient city of Aegina. Old chapels and the remains of a Byzantine city. The Aeginetans settled there to flee from the Saracen pirates from 896 to 1800 AD when they returned to the harbour.

Palaia Chora, is a middle-ages village, built during 9th century and it remained the capital city of Aegina until 1826. People of Aegina built the city up on that hill to protect themselves from Saracen Pirates. On that same hill, archaeologists and historians argue that "Οίη" was built, the ancient Greek city mentioned by Herodotus and Pausanias. There used to be 366 churches in total, one for each day of the year. Today, only 38 are preserved. A few of them are in good condition and worth paying a visit for their history and the wall paintings that survive to this day. It's very close to Saint Nektarios Monastery and visiting is easy; there are paths linking all the chapels.
