Playa Ballena is a beautiful stretch of beach with vistas of the “Tres Hermanas” (Three Sisters) rock formations. The road to the Playa Ballena park entrance is ~5km south of Uvita and is marked with signs. WARNING: there have been armed assaults at beaches in the area. Due to their isolation, Playas Ballena and Arco have become a hotspot for thieves waiting in the jungle to rob tourists. We strongly recommend leaving all valuables at home when visiting these beaches.

Unique an stunning. The land at this beach is shaped like a whale tail (see satellite views) and Whales go past this "tail" on their migration path. Go just before high tide when 2 sides of tide "meet" like a zipper. LOVE this place.

Home to the famous “Whale’s Tail,” a large, kilometer-long sandbar that can be accessed on foot at low tide, Marino Ballena National Park in Uvita is an ocean-lovers paradise. From October through March, humpback whales and their kin can be spotted close to the coast. Dolphins swim in abundance in these calm waters as well. Expect to pay about $10 per person to enter the beach.

There are many entrances to this national park and beach area which includes the Whale Tail at low tide. The best and closest entrance to experience the Whale Tail is the paved road just past the Gato plaza off the main highway between the Gato plaza and the Luna Decor store. Entrance fee is about $6 per car and parking is about another $2. You can rent surfboards/boogie boards at the entrance.

This beach has an incredible view of Ballena Island, just off the coast. It is just 5 minutes south of PurUvita. It is part of Marino Ballena National Park, so there is an entrance fee.
