The village of Gásadalur, surrounded by the highest mountains on Vágar, enjoys a panoramic view over the isle of Mykines. Until recently, the village of Gásadalur was the only village on the Faroe Islands without road connection to other villages. Until then, the path over the mountain was the only connection to the outside world. The postman carried the post over the mountain three times a week. In 2004 the Faroese Parliament built a tunnel to Gásadalur which ended the isolation. However, the cozy atmosphere of the village is still intact. WHAT TO EXPERIENCE IN GÁSADALUR Whether you choose to hike the old post route or drive through the newly built tunnel, the village is a very special and unique place to visit characterized by its isolation until recently. A place undiscovered, yet full of magic. In Gásadalur you will find Múlafossur, one of the prettiest waterfalls in the world. This is one of the most spectacular views in the Faroe Islands as the waterfall just falls off the cliffs. Above the village is the highest mountain of Vágar Island, called Árnafjall. In the village there is also a café and venue called Gásadalsgarður here you can enjoy a carefully selected menu of food and beverages. The cafe serves local Faroese food and is as authentic as it gets. A small souvenir shop is also located in Gásadalur. The shop is called Uanni and is run by a local couple who take great pride in what they stock. This includes sheepskin, hand knitted sweaters made by the owner herself, and various other interesting items. Gásadalur is a “must see” for all tourists because of its unspoiled nature and lack of influence from the present.

Home to the beautiful waterfall Múlafossur, the village of Gásadalur sits tucked away between lush green fields and soaring mountains to all sides. Prior to 2004, there were only three ways of reaching the tiny community; none of them included travel by car. One way was to hike over the 700-metre mountains, and the other two options were by boat or helicopter. The inaccessibility of the remote location meant the village’s population fell dramatically. In 2004, a tunnel was blasted through one of the mountains, allowing automobile travel to the isolated settlement. Today, the population totals approximately a dozen people.

MÚLAFOSSUR WATERFALL, GÁSADALUR A must see for any visitor to the Faroe Island! One of the biggest tourist attraction on the Faroe Island, and to good reason, the view on Gásadalur and Múlafossur is spectacular: the waterfall that just falls off the island. A breathtaking panorama both towards the village and the close-by Mykines island.
