Step back in time to the 1880s when Goulburn was one of the first regional centres to supply piped drinking water to its residents. The Goulburn Historic Waterworks has remained intact with a pump house and working steam beam engine. It is located in an idyllic setting on the banks of the Wollondilly River. This unique facility is the only complete, workable, steam powered municipal water supply left in its original location in the southern hemisphere. The buildings and engine are of national significance and are now protected by a permanent conservation order. The Goulburn Historic Waterworks is home to the Steampunk Victoriana Fair. The retro-futuristic fair has clothing, art, music & so much more on offer plus a chance to dress up in the genre that melds the classical Victorian era with industrial progress & all things powered by steam. Check out their Facebook page for further details.

Something for everyone - set next to the wollindilly river this is a lovely place to visit. Picnic areas, bbq’s, a cafe and the museum with lot of green space to watch the duck and other animals.

The Goulburn Historic Waterworks is set on the banks of the picturesque Wollondilly River at Marsden Weir, Goulburn, New South Wales. Built between 1883 and 1885, the steam operated pumping facility provided Goulburn’s first reticulated water supply. The pumphouse still contains the original Appleby Bros. Beam Engine pump and Galloway Boilers. This rare facility is the only complete, steam powered municipal water supply left in its original location, in the Southern Hemisphere. The buildings and engine are of national significance and are now protected by a permanent conservation order. The Waterworks is listed on the State Heritage and National Trust Registers. We also are fortunate to also have a horizontal engine built by Hick, Hargreaves & Co, England in 1866. While not original to the site it is demonstrates an earlier type and different style of a stationary steam engine.
