The Kangra Fort was built by the royal Rajput family of Kangra State (the Katoch dynasty), which traces its origins to the ancient Trigarta Kingdom, mentioned in the Mahabharata epic. It is the largest fort in the Himalayas and probably the oldest dated fort in India. The fort is an exhilarating 1-hr drive from Vayu Kutir on the Dharamshala highway.

Dharamshala, which nestles in the foothills of the sub-Himalayan Dhauladhar mountain range, is a popular tourist destination that is also the winter capital of Himachal Pradesh and the seat of the Tibetan government in exile headed by His Highness the Dalai Lama. Just 57-km from Vayu Kutir (1hr 30min dirve) , a day trip to Dharamshala from Vayu Kutir is a good alternative to an overnight stay at the crowded and expensive hill station.
