The zoo is a great place to visit and bring the kids if you want. Admission is free, but be forewarned it costs $20 to park there (when there is space) and there are no in/out parking privileges for vehicles.
We like to see the pandas. My favorite time of the year is when they have the zoo lit up with Christmas lights. It is also located in one of the older neighborhoods in the city so you can walk by to see some great architecture in the neighborhood.

By far my favorite museum to visit. Admission to many of the museums in DC are free, which is great to save on the budget. There are also some great sections in this museum where you can interact with the science.

Food Scene
If you are looking for local food, you can find lots of chain foods nearby (and fast food). If you are looking for good local food, we recommend traveling into DC - specifically Chinatown for some great food!
This place has the most amazing chicken! Totally worth the drive out and any kind of wait you may have! They speak fluent English and Spanish.

Amazing breakfast, lunch, and dinner! They are a local coffee shop/diner/bar scene that is amazing. The food never disappoints and it is worth it to wait up to an hour for the food! Although this is a bit of a hike from our place, it is definitely worth a visit if you have the time.

Neighborhoods
This is the neighborhood you will be staying in. It is great to catch a bus to the metro or to just drive to the metro and park there to get into the city. It can be difficult in the winter after it snows as the city isn't the best at making sure sidewalks get cleared after a storm.

Bring a variety of layers
I would definitely recommend packing in layers. Temperatures can vary wildly - from 50F to 90F+ in one day.
I would recommend bringing at least a sweater.
We provide ponchos for when it rains.

Metro is the fastest way to get around
If you can get from place to place using the metro (subway), we recommend you stick to that. Upside - it is the fastest as they don't have to worry about traffic. Downside - it can get pricy and the price varies depending on what day and what time you are riding it.
If you do ride the bus, it is best to keep to yourself as there can be some colorful characters on the bus!
