Perched on the highest point in the Oxfordshire Cotswolds, Chipping Norton was once a centre for the Cotswold wool trade and was given a Royal charter by King John in 1205. The medieval Guildhall and St Mary's Church reflect the prosperity brought by the wool trade. Later, sheep farming was largely replaced by arable, but agriculture remained important in this part of the Oxfordshire Cotswolds. Many of the original houses around the market place were rebuilt in the 18th century with fashionable Georgian frontages. Renowned for its antique shops and diverse shopping offer, including a regular market - Chipping Norton retains a robust living, working market town atmosphere.

At nearly 800ft, Stow is the highest of the Cotswold towns, located on the Roman Fosse Way and at the point where several roads meet, hence an important trading centre. It has a long history and probably dates from a prehistoric fortified settlement on top of the hill and had a special importance in the English Civil War, the last battle was fought close by in Donnington back in 1646. St Edward’s Church, was used as a prison for the defeated Royalist troops, as it was the only lockable building in the town. Some of the damage sustained at this time can still be seen today. The Market Square is large and impressive and testifies to the town’s former importance.

Chipping Campden is quite simply one of the finest towns in the Cotswolds – well preserved and full of history but also full of life and bustle. Its elegant High Street is a delight, described by the historian, G.M. Trevelyan, as “the most beautiful village street now left in the island”: a broad gentle curve flanked on either side by an unbroken sweep of buildings covering a host of architectural styles with buildings dating back to the 14th century. In the centre of the High Street stands the iconic Market Hall, now in the care and ownership of the National Trust, and built in 1627 by Sir Baptist Hicks to provide shelter for traders selling perishable goods like cheese and butter.
