X-Country Skiing and Snowmobiling Granville boasts about 52 miles of trails that connect to unlimited miles of trails in our area. Middle Granville is the home of the Border Riders Snowmobile Club, who work hard to maintain the trails and good relations with the landowners. Ice fishing, skating and sleigh riding are a few other favorite activities in the area. For the Downhill Skiing Enthusiast – Washington County offers Willard Mountain, less than ½ hour from Granville. West Mountain in Glens Falls NY along with Killington and Okemo and Bromley ski areas in VT are within an hour’s drive. The NY Adirondacks and the Vermont Green Mountains provide the most spectacular scenery in the Northeast and Granville NY is nestled between them. Located on the NY and VT border, in the northeast part of beautiful Washington County, in the Mettawee River Valley, at the end of the Rainbow. Many areas have Panoramic Views of both Mountain ranges, offering breathtaking fall foliage and year round beauty to all that visit or live here. Mettawee River Hunting and Fishing, at its BEST! The “1878 History of Washington County” mentions that the St. Francis Indians claimed their ancestral rights to hunt, fish and trade in Granville NY. Today Granville, located at the junction of the Mettowee and Indian Rivers, is still a very desirable area. Many hunters and fishermen today agree with the St. Francis Indians of long ago, that the area’s abundance of native Brook Trout, Bass fishing, Deer, Beaver, Black Bear, Rabbit and restored Wild Turkey Flocks deserve traveling long distances to enjoy. Don’t miss the National Bass Fishing and Ice Fishing Tournaments!

Vermont is all about supporting local entrepreneurs, especially small farmers. And Rutland is one of the few cities in Vermont to have a farmers market running each week of the year. From May to October the Vermont Farmers Market and Rutland County Farmers Market combine forces at Depot Park, located in the heart of downtown Rutland to form the Downtown Rutland Summer Market. This massive outdoor market features farmers, potters, canners, bakers, jewelers, distillers, quilters, live music and much more. Not to mention an excellent selection of ethnic cuisines. Many say this is the largest farmers market in the entire state! You can find the Downtown Rutland Summer Market running from 9am - 2pm on Saturdays (for the full experience), or stop by on Wednesday afternoons from 3 - 6pm for a mid-week restock from a smaller selection of vendors.

Mount Marcy is the highest of the High Peaks, and its impressive presence commands the view from many other peaks. The shortest route to its cone-shaped summit is from the Adirondack Loj parking area. Don't be fooled by the relatively low milage of this hike — this is a steep, serious climb, especially during the last mile, which ascends the summit on open rock. *Though not described on this page, if you are hiking Marcy as part of a Great Range loop from AMR (St Huberts), this hike will require a parking reservation from May 1 - October 31. Please plan accordingly. Visit www.HikeAMR.org for more information and to reserve your parking spot.* How to get there The shortest and most popular route leaves from the Adirondack Mountain Club's High Peaks Information Center parking lot, near Adirondack Loj. There is a parking fee to use this large lot. Leave Lake Placid on Route 73, turn right on Adirondack Loj Road, and follow it to its end. Pay the fee at the booth, even if no one is inside. By the numbers • Elevation: 5,344 feet • Elevation gain: 3,166 feet • Distance: 7.4 miles, one way, to the summit • Mount Marcy is the highest mountain in the Adirondacks and New York • Mount Marcy's summit is home to fragile alpine vegetation — avoid trampling it by staying on the rocks at all times • Always follow [file:leave-no-trace-seven-principles.pdf] Hiking This is the big one! Mount Marcy is the tallest mountain in New York. While not technically challenging, it offers plenty of varied terrain, making for a very long day. The summit's massive rock dome boasts some of the best views in the northeast. Be sure to tread lightly, though, as Marcy is home to endangered alpine vegetation. Only walk on designated paths and stay on open rock at all times. There are four main trails to Mount Marcy's summit. The route from the Adirondack Loj parking area, the Van Hoevenberg Trail, is the most popular and heavily used — and at 7.4 miles one way, it's also the shortest. We recommend you pick up a guidebook for more in-depth details on the longer approaches to this peak. For those demanding a very long outing or a greater challenge, a hike up Marcy can also be combined with Mount Skylight and Gray, two other High Peaks. This is a 14.8 mile round trip with a moderate to steep climb. Starting from the Loj parking lot, the first 2.3 miles of the Van Hoevenberg Trail are easy to moderate as it approaches the former site of Marcy Dam. Storms from Hurricane Irene blew out the dam, but there are still excellent views of Mount Colden, Avalanche Mountain, and Wright Peak. Turn left after the remnants of the dam to follow Phelps Brook, a rocky trail that becomes steep at times, especially before it reaches Marcy Brook at 4.4 miles. Cross the brook and take the herd path right for about 50 yards to the top of Indian Falls, where there is an outstanding view of the MacIntyre Range. From Indian Falls it's a moderate ascent up to tree line. There are amazing views to be had during the rest of the route, but be aware that temperature, wind, and visibility can change quickly and with little warning on the upper portions of any mountain. Things ease off for a bit, and several views of Marcy's summit cone reveal themselves before timberline is reached at 6.8 miles. From here it's a steep climb over open rock to the top, which is reached at 7.4 miles. Mount Marcy in winter Mount Marcy is a challenging mountain that should only be attempted by experienced hikers, especially in winter. Snowshoes are a must for much of the route, and snow spikes or crampons are necessary to climb the exposed upper reaches of the peak. Plan on the temperature in the higher elevations being at least 20 degrees colder than in the valley, not including the windchill. Bring several extra non-cotton layers, a headlamp with spare batteries, extra food, a windbreaker, goggles, face mask, and supplies for spending the night in case of emergency.

Welcome to Bomoseen State Park. The 3,576-acre park is located in the Taconic Mountains on the shores of Lake Bomoseen, the largest lake entirely within Vermont’s borders. The Taconics are the slate-producing region of Vermont, and the area's history parallels the rise and fall of Vermont's slate industry. The park contains several quarry holes and their adjacent colorful slate rubble piles as reminders of this period. These quarries provided slate for the West Castleton Railroad and Slate Company, a complex of 60 to 70 buildings that stood between Glen Lake and Lake Bomoseen. Several slate buildings and foundations remain in the park. A self-guided Slate History Trail leads hikers through remnants of this bygone era.

Just missing out by 43 feet on being one of Vermont's coveted 4000ers, Pico Peak is the 6th highest peak in the state. With 591 feet of prominence, it also is the northernmost summit of Central Vermont's Coolidge Range of the Green Mountains (being part of the larger Appalachian Mountains). It's also number 71 on the list of New England's hundred highest. It's nearest neighbor is the well-known Killington Peak, being connected by a common north-south ridge and only 2.53 miles between. The belief is that it was named either after the native Abenaki tribe's word for "the pass", or, "opening" (seeing that there is Sherburne Pass on it's northern flanks) or for the Spanish word for peak. If it is the latter, the pronunciation has been changed to sound like Pie-ko by locals.

Welcome to New York's Coolest Little Ski Area, Willard Mountain! You may ask what makes us "New York's Coolest Little Ski Area"? The reason, we believe, is simple. You see, there is a magical place in the hills of southern Washington County where it's still about the people. Located only 30 minutes from most of the Capital Region, we are a place where everyone still knows your name, and you and your kids are treated like part of our family. Willard Mountain has become known as a place where everyone can learn to ski or snowboard in a relaxed family environment, or simply enjoy cruising down the trails on our varied terrain. Best of all, the services and activities at Willard surround the same base area. Willard Mountain is a ski area where you can come for a few hours on a weeknight and get that big mountain feel with our advanced terrain, all in a price that's affordable. Maybe it's snow tubing that your family enjoys? We have that too, in a park that limits ticket sales so you get more tubing and less time in line! A day or evening on the slopes is not the extreme events you see on TV or the computer. It's a day of fun, laughter, and time together. Most importantly at a price that is affordable. You see it's true that there are still magical places like Willard Mountain where the entire staff is there for the true love of what they do, from the employees helping you park your car or putting you on a lift, to 5 snowmakers who control every crystal of snow that comes out of the gun. Willard is a place where the owners and managers would love to sit down with you and have a cup of coffee and hear how we can serve you better. It is a fun, safe, family friendly place that for the cost of an away weekend of skiing can get you a Willard season pass for your family! These are all the reasons why we believe we are "New York's Coolest Little Ski Area." We will exceed your expectations in every way because we will not allow it to be any other way. We guarantee that! Sincerely, Chic and Kris Wilson - Owners Keith Mann - Operations Manager Jason Baker - Mountain Manager
