The visitors can see the development of medical history from the times of ethno medicine till the mid 20th century in thematic or overview excursions, as well as enjoy a unique exhibition concerning outer biology and medicine. The Pauls Stradns Museum for history of medicine is one of the three biggest museums for history of medicine in the world. The story begins in the basement of the museum building, where the placed exhibits and dioramas show the first steps of the evolution of medicine. Dealing with trauma wounds, bandaging wounds, the healing methods of traditional medicine – all this was already known to man in the ancient times. A crucial part at that time was mythical medicine – amulets, lucky charms and witchcraft, which was performed by a hex, shaman and mages. The journey continues in the medieval floor of the museum showing the reconstructed medieval cloister hospital and pharmacy. Walk through the medieval town designed by Pauls Stradins and learn of the illnesses of that time as well as treatment methods.

This is the oldest public museum in Latvia and one of the oldest in Europe, the origin of which dates back to 1773. It is located in a significant 13th–20th century architectural monument — the Riga Dome Cathedral ensemble, which comprises a church, the gothic Cross Gallery, and a museum, the pride of which is the 18th century Column Hall, built in Classicism style in place of the former monastery. The Museum's 16 exposition halls tell of the creation and development of Riga over more than 800 years, as well as shipping in the territory of Latvia from the 10th century until today. One can view a unique historical legacy in the exhibitions, including ancient Latvian ornaments, tools and weapons, a 13th century "Riga ship", weights and measures from the time of the Hanseatic League, the sword of the Riga executioner, the world’s smallest photo camera MINOX, outstanding artefacts made by Riga silversmiths, one of Riga’s ancient wonders — "Lielais Kristaps" (Great Kristaps), and much more

Central Riga, the downtown area, is included on the UNESCO World Heritage List thanks to its Medieval dwellings, quaint 19th century wooden structures and its prime examples of Art Nouveau architecture that, actually, are like no other! The very first Art Nouveau-style building is rental property with shops at Audēju iela 7 (1899). ’Elegance’ and ‘vision’ are the terms that come to mind when gazing at the adjacent buidings at Elizabetes iela 10a & 10b, designed by the avid advocate of Art Nouveau, the architect Mihails Eizenšteins. Evocative female figurines, painted flora, twisted braids and masks are what makes up the facade at Smilšu iela 8. The apartment house at Alberta iela 11, designed by Eižens Laube, reflects the efforts of Latvian architects of the day to create a national style. Many natural elements were called forth, like travertine and wood, and embellished with ethnographic ornamentation. The facade of the Riga Latvian Society House at Merķeļa iela 13 is adorned with striking figures drawn by one of the masters of Latvian art - Jānis Rozentāls

Due to Chancery of the President of Latvia moving to the premises of the Blackheads House, since August 2012 the Blackheads House will be closed to visitors. The House of the Blackheads, originally called the New House, was built in 1334. It has been reconstructed several times from 1522, when stones where set next to the doors, to the late-19th century, when lion figures where set above the front doors and St. George's figure appeared in the annex. The House of Blackheads was set up as a meeting and party venue for various Riga public organisations. In the 17th century it was occupied only by the foreign, mostly German, traders — the Blackheads' society. One of their patrons was St. Maurice, the leader of the Roman Legion, who was executed by decapitation. Thus a black head became the society's symbol and was portrayed in their coat of arms. The House of the Blackheads, which is regarded as the most beautiful building in Riga, just like the Town Hall were destroyed in the World War II. After the war, there was great interest on the House of the Blackheads and several projects for its reconstruction were drafted.

Parks & Nature

Vērmanes Garden Park is Riga's second oldest public park; the numerous benches are always occupied by Rigans and visitors to the city, the historic open-air stage features various concerts, and children have fun on the park's playground. Vērmanes Garden Park is situated in the very centre of the city, surrounded by Tērbatas, Elizabetes, Krišjāņa Barona and Merķeļa streets. Riga's second oldest park was created by donations in early 19th century. It was named after the wealthy widow Anna Gertrud Vērmane (born Ebel, 1750.-1827), who had allocated a piece of land and a great sum of money for the park. Now a statue to the generous lady stands there. Vērmanes Garden Park features various sculptures - splendid four season fountain, majestic stone lions, a monument to the collector of Latvian folk songs - Krišjānis Barons, and a bronze dandy - a monument to Latvian artist and designer Kārlis Padegs - on the other side of the fence. The garden park turns into a fairy tale during a year's darkest period as it features strings of beaming lamps, music, and giant snow-men. The wooden open-air stage on the Elizabetes Street side is popular with chess players; sometimes it holds concerts and performances of dance groups. Having strolled through the park, relax in the cosy tea house or a night club located in the historic building at the corner of Tērbatas and Merķeļa streets. Now the renovated premises houses the music centre Vernisāža, established by Latvian composer Raimonds Pauls

Kronvalda Park (originally Strēlnieku Garden) is 11.92 hectares in area, with the city canal running through it. Bordering Elizabetes, Kr. Valdemāra streets, Kronvalda and Kalpaka boulevards. The city canal splits the park into two parts. After dismantling the city dikes in 1863, the Union of Riga German Riflemen erected a society house and a shooting-ground on the right side of the park. Later, in 1883, this part was enlarged according to a project by architect Georgs Kūfalts with around 2,000 rosebushes blossoming in flowerbeds and rose-gardens. After 1927 the State handed the whole garden, except for the Riga Congress Centre, over to the city's inhabitants, and garden architect Andrejs Zeidaks started creating a landscaped park here. During 1930's the park was named after member of the Young Latvians Movement Atis Kronvalds

Triumph Arch and the sound of a tennis ball meeting a racket at Viesturs Garden Park remind you of the exciting competition at Paris' famous Roland Garros tournaments. The venue once saw the formation of the very first sports clubs in Riga. The park still has the third generation of elms once planted by Russian Emperor Peter the Great. The park is also known as Song Festival Park as the first festival was held here in 1873. 7.60 hectares in size, Viesturs Garden Park is the oldest in Riga. It was set up in 1711 according to an order of Peter the Great. The Russian Emperor had chosen the area for his summer residence and a spacious garden. In 1841, the park was given to Riga City; since then the area held theatre performances, concerts and other events for local people. In the 1860s, a new restaurant was built here, as well as an open-air stage which saw the first All-Latvian Song and Dance Festival in 1873. From 1883 the park featured a skating rink and a slide for sledding in wintertime and an area for tennis in summertime. The park welcomed the Triumph Arch or Alexander Gate in 1936, and a group of sculptures in 1973 dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the Latvian Song Festival. Today you can still play tennis here, listen to quacking ducks, or buy an apartment in one of the recently-built complexes

Triumph Arch and the sound of a tennis ball meeting a racket at Viesturs Garden Park remind you of the exciting competition at Paris' famous Roland Garros tournaments. Riga Central Market offers hemp seed butter, pork snouts, belash, the Latvian drink kvass, and other interesting food. This is a place where you can haggle with the vendors, enjoy a unique shopping experience, and the architecture. You can see from afar how architecturally complementary are Railway Bridge and the vaults of the Central Market hangars or 'pavilions'. Meanwhile, the market area and the pavilions feature the liveliness of buying/selling
