If you want to spend a peaceful day on the beach—and not fight for parking—I can't recommend Fort De Soto enough. Yes, there's an old military fort there for you to explore, but it's devoid of hotels and traffic lights. If you need anything, there's a gift/snack shop as well. Last time I visited, it was about $5 per vehicle to drive into the park, and parking is free.

We're fortunate to have a terrific theme park right here in Tampa Bay. Record-breaking coasters, a zoo's worth of wild animals, and terrific shows make for a very full day.

Be sure to grab lunch or spend an afternoon shopping in Gulfport! The beach park has beautiful views of Boca Ciega Bay, and the local shops shouldn't be missed. Most areas in Gulfport offer free parking.

The new pier in Saint Pete is a wonderful attraction that's quickly become a local favorite. Events, a bayside beach, ice cream, dining, a nature center, and the best view of the St. Pete skyline from Pier Teak's rooftop bar.

This busy (seriously, BUSY) market has fresh-made meals, a coffee bar, deli, out-of-this-world bakery, and the best wine selection around. You can order a sandwich, eat on the patio, and people-watch to your heart's content.

Ice cream is my weakness... and unfortunately for me there's a great, local place nearby called Bright Ice. Their original location is a short drive down to 5th Ave N. New flavors are introduced monthly, but they always carry their staples like Blueberrles with Cinnamon, Caramelized Bananas with Peanut Butter & Honey, and my favorite, Lemon with Crystallized Ginger.
