This is a really great little park in the Cherokee National Forest, and it's just down the road a short distance. Go down to the church and turn left on Powder Branch Rd. Continue till Powder Branch ends, then turn left. Finally turn left again at the end of that road. That's the best way and a pretty relaxing drive through the country. I recommend it for a picnic and casual light walk in the woods without going into town or touching a main road at all.
The Laurels Picnic Area

Roundtrip, the hike to Laurel Falls and back is 2.3 miles in total length. Hikers will climb roughly 314 feet in elevation before arriving at the 80-foot waterfall. The hike is well worth it though - Laurel Falls is very photogenic, and is widely considered to be one of the best waterfall hikes in the Smokies.

Archeological excavations have found Native Americans lived near the shoals since prehistoric times, and Cherokees gathered there. As Europeans began settling the Trans-Appalachian frontier, the shoals proved strategic militarily, as well as shaped the economies of Tennessee and Kentucky. Today, the shoals are protected as a National Historic Landmark and are maintained as part of Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park. There is a museum, as well as walking trails.

I love that little cave that's there. The site includes 45 acres, eleven historic buildings, the Tipton/Gifford/Simerly cemetery, a limestone cave, a natural spring, a buffalo trace, a nature trail, and a Visitor Center. Organic and whole food market in Johnson City. Earth Fare started in Asheville, NC I believe and has several locations in the southeast now, I think. They were non-corporate for a long time. Those days are long gone.

Beech Mountain offers skiing, snowboarding, and tubing in the winter months. In the summer, recreation includes hiking and mountain biking. Beech Mountain Resort runs chairlifts for downhill mountain biking.[2]
One of the more interesting walking areas is the defunct Land of Oz theme park, which existed briefly in the 1970s; remnants of the park can be visited today.
