Diocletian Palace is one of the best preserved monuments of the Roman architecture in the world. The Emperor's Palace was built as a combination of a luxury villa - summer house and a Roman military camp (castrum), divided into four parts with two main streets. Southern part of the Palace was, in this scheme, intended for the Emperor's apartment and appropriate governmental and religious ceremonies, while the north part was for the Imperial guard - the military, servants, storage etc. The Palace is a rectangular building (approximately 215 x 180 meters) with four large towers at the corners, doors on each of the four sides and four small towers on the walls. The lower part of the walls has no openings, while the upper floor is open with a monumental porch on the south and halls with grand arch windows on the other three sides. Over the centuries the Palace inhabitants, and later also the citizens of Split adapted parts of the palace for their own requirements, thus the inside buildings as well as the exterior walls with the towers significantly changed the original appearance, but the outlines of the Imperial Palace are still very visible.

Among the European cathedrals the one in Split finds its seat in the oldest building - the Mausoleum of the Roman Emperor Diocletian. Inside the cathedral, at the end of the second millennium, the history reconciles ancient pagan, Christian Medieval and modern heritage. Mausoleum of the Emperor - persecutor of Christians becomes a cathedral in the 7th century where altars with relics of St Domnius and St Anastasius, martyrs executed in the nearby Solin, take an honorary place.

Matejuška has been for centuries a port for small boats owned by fishermen of Split, the residents of Veli Varoš set sail from there out to the sea to feed their families. Even today there are dozens of boats tied up there, their nets drying , bait being prepared, with a monument dedicated to fishermen biding them farewell as they sail out to sea - a big fish hook. Matejuška is also known for socializing among those who appreciate its aromas and sounds, you can always see them gathered in good spirits around a barbeque with the day's catch on it, often also in the company of wine and song. This is what makes this old port a place where the contact between the locals and guests is most easily accomplished, to the enjoyment of either side. If someone should get hungry, many casual restaurants and taverns have opened around Matejuška, the most popular of them is the mythical Fife, attracting for years everyone who is eager to feel the spirit of the city they have chosen for their holiday.

Prokurative or as they are officially called, Republic Square resemble the Venice St. Marks Square. They are located west of the Riva and they were named after the arches found on the neo-Renaissance buildings surrounding the square on three sides. Most people to this day know it by that name. The square is only open on the south side, providing a beautiful view of the harbour and the Riva (waterfront). The building of the Prokurativa was initiated by one of the most renowned mayors in the history of the city Antonio Bajamonti in the mid 19th century.

Pjaca (People's Square, another square nobody in Split calls by its real name), is first mentioned in 13th century as St Lawrence's Square, and it was the first inhabited part of Split outside the Diocletian Palace, leaning to its western wall. Already for centuries the Pjaca is the central stage of the city life, there in the Gothic building of the Old Town Hall, today an exhibition centre, was the seat of the city's authority, and in still beautiful and preserved Palaces on the outskirts of the Pjaca lived the noble families Cambi, Pavlović, Nakić, Ciprianis, Karepić... Still open is one of the oldest book shops in the world, Morpurgo, to this day it looks almost the same as it looked in 1861, and in the Café Central where the intellectuals of Split gathered is where the tourism of Split begun with the former hotel Troccoli. The city clock has been ticking for centuries on Pjaca, unique by his 24 instead of 12 digits, and in the surrounding cafés, restaurants and bars the citizens of Split could always find a place to rest, meet, be seen and see others, go through the most important events of the city.

Voćni trg (Fruit square) Believe it or not, but this square, maybe the most beautiful one in the city, to the citizens of Split is more familiar under its unofficial rather than its official name of Trg Braće Radić (Square of the Radić brothers). Its "familiar" name comes from the fact that it was once home to the bustling and colourful market where women from the surrounding villages came to sell their fruit. On the neighbouring square, west of the Fruit Square, fruit was sold. There are several landmarks decorating this not so large a square thriving with city life in bars, restaurants and exclusive shops, a venue often used also by fairs. The biggest is certainly the octagonal Venetian tower, the leftover of the former fortress, built in the 15th century for the defence of, at the time, a small town. Opposite the tower is a magnificent Palace of the old family Milesi from the 17th century with a spectacular Baroque facade, one of the best examples of that style in the whole of Dalmatia. Just in front of it stands the monument to the father of the Croatian literature, the citizen of Split, Marko Marulić, who was one of the most important philosophers and intellectuals of the 15th century. The author of the monument, as well as of several others in the city is Ivan Meštrović. This is, of course, not all, as every stone on the Fruit Square, just like on the other old city squares , bears witness to the history and tells the story of the times that passed, from the oldest of days, "represented" by the south-western tower of the Diocletian Palace on the very exit from the Fruit Square to the Riva.

The Riva started to look the way it does today two centuries ago, when the French, in time of Napoleon ruled these parts through Marshal Marmont. Today this promenade is the cities living room, the most popular and most important public place in Split. In the meantime it has been widened and reconstructed several times, but it was always blessed with the most spectacular set, the south facade of the Diocletian Palace, with the entrance into the Substructures, and later on with the buildings that were built west of the Palace, also the Franciscan monastery with the church of St. Francis, and the Bajamonti Dešković Palace and last but not least the Port Authorities building on the east end. Riva today is a pedestrian heaven, thrusting with Cafés and restaurants, an ideal place for having your morning or afternoon coffee, or for an evening out with friends over drinks. Riva is the stage of the city life of Split, a venue for numerous cultural and entertainment events, boisterous Split carnival, as well as the stage for meeting Split sportsmen after countless successes, such as Goran Ivanišević, Hajduk football club players and Jugoplastika basketball players, Olimpic medal winners...

Although a conqueror, Napoleon's marshal Marmont is responsible for the urbanisation of Dalmatian cities, in return the citizens of Split have named their most beautiful street after him. Marmont street is not only beautiful but also historically meaningful. In 1922 a library and a reading room has been founded there for Francophiles, today Alliance Francaise. The first cinema of Split found its home there as well. A unique fish market decorates its centre, special because of the fact that you won't find flies there due to the smell of sulphur which can still be felt from the neighbouring spa. It is also decorated by the beautiful Secession buildings Duplančić and Tončić, while its northern end boarders through Venetian bastion with the architecture of the Theatre and the church of Our Lady of Good Health. Two of the most popular exhibition centres in the city are also in this street, Salon Galić and the Photo Gallery. A couple of passage ways lead directly from it to Prokurative. From the Riva to the top of Marmont street numerous shops line up from right to left, turning this street into one of the most important shopping oases' of the city centre, while the top of the street is thrusting with popular cafés and restaurants. Witty contemporary fountain, called Pirja, should not be missed! It still makes you wonder what was the message the artist was trying to convey?

The West Coast is a kind of a seaside continuation of the Riva, a promenade stretching 623 meters in length. Paved entirely with white stone from Brač, hosting luxurious yachts tied to its coastline and with cafes and restaurants along its entire length, it represents the new popular meeting point for the Split’s citizens and guests. The West Coast is not only a place where with your coffee you can enjoy in the most spectacular view of Split, there you can also find out who are the Split’s athlete’s who have won an Olympic medal and as such promoted its city all around the world. Along the promenade, right by the sea, bronze plates with the names, the year of the Olympic games, the city the Olympics were held in, the medal that was won and the image of the sport, are imbedded into the white stone. They are lined up chronologically starting with the first Olympic medal.

Parks & Nature

Marjan is the primary symbol of Split. Nature plated the northern slopes mainly in limestone, while the southern ones are set in stone, some layers of marl (tupina) and a rocky shoreline. From the eastern boarder towards the west, all the way to the cape St. Jure, it is 3.5 kilometres long and 1.5 kilometres wide. Its three peaks, three unique belvedere's, are stretching above the sea 125, 148 and 178 meters, with a view towards Split, the surrounding islands, the Kaštela Riviera, Solin and Trogir. Citizens of Split, out of their affection for it, started with its afforestation in 1852, planting the first pine trees, and already in 1903 they have established the Marjan Association which has been taking care of this wondrous hill ever since. Thanks to its diligent inhabitants in the nineteenth century, Split is proud of its "city's lungs" as all the visitors regardless their age can enjoy peace and serenity, recreation and fun with numerous churches, hermit oases' as well as natural and manmade jogging trails.

"We are going to Bačvice…", is tune often heard around the town, words of a joyous hymn to the municipal beach, officially designated as such in 1919. Bačvice is a phenomenon of nature, a sandy beach at the heart of the city, in the vicinity of the city harbor, and it can accommodate over ten thousand people. During the low tides in springtime Bačvice turn into a split version of Copacabana where many famous soccer players first displayed their talent, where the rugby in Split was born, where even in wintertime a unique game of "picigin" is played (a sort of volleyball, played in the sea shallows with a small ball). Bačvice today represents a best known promenade for all generations, and during nighttime is the favorite center of nightlife.

Bene This beach is on the north-eastern part of Marjan. Partly sandy and on the sides rocky beach is hidden in a pine forest. Filled with numerous additional facilities; a restaurant, tennis courts, playground for children, showers, changing cabins, makes it ideal for families. Only bus number 12 drives directly to this beach, the alternative is by foot. Next to the beach is a part adapted for the disabled, including a lift aiding the disabled on their way into the sea. This beach is ideal for playing card games, namely traditional "trešeta" and "briškula" usually played by the locals.

Strossmayer's garden or Đardin as the citizens of Split only call it, has settled in-between the two bastions, the remains of the Venetian fortification, north of the Diocletian palace beside its main entrance - The Golden Gate. This area takes over the function of the main city garden in 1859, and in mid-20th century a beautiful fountain was added with the so called "Putto" (a figure resembling an angel). The present outlook is the result of the last renovations in 2002, with the lyrics of a great Croatian poet Tin Ujević carved on the surrounding walls, and a new modernistic fountain on the west side of Đardin. Right next to the park is the renowned monument to the Bishop Gregory of Nin, the remains of a Medieval monastery, the Art Gallery as one of the most important museums of Split, which all together makes this part of the city one of the cultural centres of Split. Katalinić hill A hill southeast of the city harbour, separating the harbour from Bačvice, was in the Middle Ages the location of the church of St Peter de Buctis, and later of the fort which defended the city from the sea attacks. It earned the name it carries today at the end of the 19th century, after the local estates belonging to the rich family from Split named Katalinić. The most memorable trademark of this park today is the Memorial Lighthouse, together with the tomb to the unknown sailor who died in the Second World War dedicated to the memory of the sailors who died at war and in peace. The lighthouse was damaged during the aggression war on Croatia at the beginning of the nineties, and it was restored in 2014. Like Sustipan, Katalinić also offers a beautiful view of the sea and the islands, but also of Bačvice and the city. It is a favourite meeting place for the young, especially those in love.

Nobody has the lungomare, a promenade by the sea, like Split! All the way from the arjan peak or the Oceanographic institute you can take a stroll along the sea all to the eastern marine city limits like: Bačvice, Ovčice, Firule, Zenta, Trstenik, Duilovo... Because of its fine sand and natural shelter Firule have always proven to be especially interesting for mothers with young children. A recreational pilgrimage to Firule grew more popular as the tennis center was organized here.
