City/town information

The town of Pāhoa and its nearby neighborhoods are about a 20 minute drive away from our center and are characterized by the colorful charm of this rustic and remote part of the Big Island. It's downtown area has historic buildings and newly built areas that contain a variety of shops, boutiques, restaurants, and grocery stores. Free-spirits, artists, and those looking to live an off-grid lifestyle with a close connection to nature will feel an affinity for this unique area. Resilient locals living here are no stranger to the influence of Pele and how lava can reshape the landscape. Over the years lava has redefined the environment, including the 2018 lower Puna volcanic eruption which destroyed a number of homes and cherished coastal sites, while also adding to the acreage of this growing island. We hope you enjoy the creative and laid-back atmosphere the town of Pāhoa and the surrounding area have to offer.

Sightseeing

Kehena is a local black sand beach just down the road about 1.4 miles. There is a short though somewhat steep trail from the roadside where most cars park to access the beach itself. Please note: This is a clothing optional beach. On Sunday’s there are often drum circles and more of a festival sort of atmosphere, while during the week there are fewer visitors. This beach can have strong currents and there is no lifeguard on duty or public bathrooms available. We recommend an intermediate level of swimming capability to enter the ocean here. Please exercise caution and respect the ocean’s strength as well as its marine life. Sightings of spinner dolphins and sea turtles are common and we encourage visitors to give them space if snorkeling or swimming out.

The Isaac Hale Beach Park includes Pohoiki Beach, one of the newest black sand beaches in the world that resulted from the 2018 lava eruption! Although the sands are soft and wonderful for sunbathing, the waves here are recommended for experienced surfers only and swimming is an infrequent occurrence with its strong currents. This area is about 6.2 miles or a 15 minute drive from our center along the enchanting Red Road that hugs the coast and passes through tree tunnels and fresh lava fields on the way to this beach. The 2018 lava eruption also inundated the local boat ramp here, creating a few small thermal ponds in the process. The Department of Health advises to not enter these ponds with cuts or open wounds because of the risk of bacterial infections, and therefore entering these ponds is at your own risk.

Located in Wailuku River State Park, a short distance from downtown Hilo and about 35 miles or a 1 hour drive from our center, Waiānuenue, meaning “rainbow water” in the Hawaiian language, is often referred to as Rainbow Falls. The 80-foot falls is known for the vibrant light spectrum that can be seen in the mist around mid to late morning on sunny days. No lifeguards are on duty and rainfall makes conditions generally unsafe for swimming. We recommend taking a moment to bask in the natural beauty, appreciate the grove of banyan trees nearby, and capture a lovely photo with these falls as a backdrop.

Mauna Kea is a dormant volcano that when measured from its underwater base is the tallest mountain in the world, measuring about 10,000 m (33,000 ft) in height, and 4,205 m (13,796 ft) above sea level. The summit is 73.7 miles or about a 1 hour and 50 minute drive from our center, and is regarded as a sacred site to the Native Hawaiian community, considered to be a place where the heavens and earth connect, as well as serving as an important source of freshwater for the Big Island. Its environment has one of the most favorable conditions for astronomical viewings in the world but the proposed construction of additional telescopes in that location continues to be met with disapproval and protest by many local residents. We encourage you to learn about the movement for indigenous land rights and both ecological and cultural preservation on the Hawaiian Islands in ways such as watching the short documentary film Like A Mighty Wave by Puʻuhonua o Puʻuhuluhulu on YouTube.

Private Vehicles Recommended

Our center is located in a lush remote jungle and the nearest restaurants and shops are about a 20 minute drive away. Public transportation picks up down the road at Seaview, though services are infrequent and can be difficult to rely upon. We recommend a rented car or private vehicle to explore our rural area and beyond with independence.

Packing for the Elements

The temperatures each season vary, but even in winter, it can be warm and you should always prepare for rain in our rainforest zone. A waterproof outer layer such as a rain jacket, or travel umbrella is helpful. You’ll also benefit from a good pair of walking shoes that can handle paved paths and unpaved terrain. If you are visiting in winter, packing layers including a light sweater or scarf is a great idea. Don’t forget to bring reef safe sunscreen and a reusable water bottle. Enjoy the various climates and biospheres that can be experienced on the Big Island!
