The Olympic Valley hosted the 1960 Winter Olympics and is home to some of the world’s most famous mountains, including KT-22 and Granite Chief. On the valley floor, a small community of locals and vacationers have built homes ranging from modest to extravagant. In the central area, one can visit many boutique shops, restaurants, bars, and other businesses. Take the tram or the funitel for a birds eye view of the valley—not to be missed! And be sure to ride the NEW gondola, which, when it was completed in 2021, realized a dream held for over 50 years of connecting to two valleys.

Alpine Meadows is considerably more low-key than neighboring Olympic Valley. You won't find luxury boutiques or fancy restaurants, but you will find a peaceful valley surrounded by idyllic wilderness. The banks of the valley's Bear Creek are dotted with homes such as ours, and many of us are year-round residents. The community is warm and welcoming, and our values include sustainability and harmony with our environment, maintaining a safe, family-friendly, dog-friendly neighborhood, and mutual aid and support. We are truly honored and grateful to share our little slice of the Sierras with our guests because we know this valley has a special kind of magic that must be felt to be believed.

Sleepy little Norden and Soda Springs overlook Donner Lake and Roller Pass— so steep, they had to take your Conestoga wagon off its wheels and roll it up on giant logs to get over the pass! Visitors can take old Highway 40 up from Donner Lake and back down for spectacular views and a look at the rail line built by Chinese immigrant workers that opened the “wild West”to commerce on a national scale. The area is covered with all kinds of lead climbing and top rope climbing, making it a rock climber dream. The Pacific Crest Trail leads up and over Donner Peak, which has great views and easy to spot pictographs carved by native populations. Winter visitors will be pleased to know this area routinely gets the most snowfall and deepest snowpack in the entire Sierras and is home to the USGS snowfall lab.

(5 miles, 1,100' elevation gain/loss) A gorgeous trail connecting five stunning alpine lakes - and it's less than a half-mile from our front door! The hike past the lakes is moderate in difficulty - expect some steep sections and uneven footing - but there are plenty of kids on the trail, so don't feel discouraged if you're traveling with your family!

Homewood is a classic local's secret in Tahoe—the kind of secret everyone knows about, yet it's still somehow a secret. Homewood is family-friendly, with stunning views of Lake Tahoe from the lifts and runs, and a surprising amount of challenging terrain, given its size and its inexpensive lift tickets. Perhaps no piece of Truckee history spans such a wide range of the past as Truckee’s Rocking Stone — a curiously balanced boulder left by a receding glacier that became the centerpiece of the home of one of Truckee’s most notable citizens. The rocking stone is a 17-ton boulder perched on an enormous flat-topped rock overlooking the Town of Truckee from off of High Street. Truckee’s Rocking Stone is a rare, glacial erratic that once tipped with the touch of a finger. It was considered a sacred site by the Washoe tribe and was used by Native Americans to keep their fish and dried meat safe from animals and birds. The large base stone was too large for animals to scale, and the vibrations from the rocking stone’s tipping scared off birds, according to the Truckee Donner Historical Society. Immediately after purchasing the Rocking Stone property in 1891, McGlashan began to worry that the precariously balanced boulder would roll off its perch and injure the children that regularly played at its base. “My grandfather wondered if he shouldn’t destroy it himself. Meanwhile, he fenced it around with a picket fence. And then he thought of the museum,” wrote Nona McGlashan in her book. The museum, like the McGlashan mansion that followed it, was unlike anything the area had ever seen before. The two-story structure enclosed the rocking stone. Nona McGlashan called it “conspicuous as a wedding cake, lyrical, imaginative, large-souled and free. It was an architectural portrait, in short, of the man who built it — Charles Fayette McGlashan, my grandfather.” Inside the museum, McGlashan displayed his famous butterfly and moth collection, at one time totaling 20,000 of the winged insects. But even more popular with visitors were the Donner Party artifacts collected by McGlashan during his research of the macabre and tragic pioneer story. Nona McGlashan remembered one of the most attention-getting artifacts — a woman’s toe bone that was found on the Donner Party hearth. The McGlashan mansion, often referred to as the “Crystal Palace,” burned down in 1935. At some point, the Rocking Stone was cemented in place for safety reasons. Today, a gazebo encircles the stone, and a walkway leads to the top of the base boulder.

A somber but fascinating museum tells the story of the ill-fated Donner party and their macabre end. The ''China Wall'' on Donner Summit was one of two walls and four tunnels the Chinese railroad workers constructed to make train travel possible to the West. The wall is over 150 years old and was constructed of fitted stones with no mortar. The tunnels were dug out of solid granite and took 2 years of back-breaking labor to complete. There is a memorial plaque dedicated to these Chinese workers on Old Hwy 40 at Donner Summit.
