The City of Neptune Beach is a small, quiet coastal community nestled on the northeast coast of Florida between Atlantic Beach and Jacksonville Beach. It is about 10 minutes away from our home. Neptune Beach has a comfortable, casual and laid-back atmosphere that invites people of all ages to enjoy the beach and other areas of natural beauty. The hard-packed sand is great for cycling and the waves are ideal for surfing. The name Neptune Beach has origins dating back to the year 1922 when Dan Wheeler built his own train station next to his home and named it Neptune. Mr. Wheeler had been informed that if he were to build a station, the train would be required to stop. The construction of the station eliminated his walking to Mayport in order to take the train to work in Jacksonville. The station was located where the Sea Turtle Inn is now located. The area remained a part of Jacksonville Beach until the tax revolt of 1931, when on August 11, the residents of Neptune voted 113 to 31 to secede from Jacksonville Beach and incorporate the City of Neptune Beach. https://www.ci.neptune-beach.fl.us/

A short drive toward the coast from our home, Ponte Vedra Beach is synonymous with golf – though it offers many other allures. The PGA Tour and The Players Championship are played at TPC Sawgrass, home of the famous 17th-hole island green. But don’t forget that the word "beach" is part of this destination’s name. Mickler's Landing Beach, a dog-friendly county beachside park, is a main access point for Ponte Vedra beach. And Ponte Vedra Beach’s 40-foot sand dunes are among the highest in Florida. From their peak, they race down to white sand beaches made from Appalachian quartz and ancient coquina. Seaside resorts and private escapes can be found in the twisted oaks and hammocks of the wild palmettos. Miles of fresh-water streams, creeks and lagoons course through the natural area of Ponte Vedra Beach. Of course, elegant shopping and fine dining in Ponte Vedra Beach also are widely available. For more information and ideas, check out VisitPonteVedra.com.

Great French restaurant. Bistro X has been providing an energetic and rustic setting to enjoy seasonally inspired French Fusion cuisine for over 21 years. Named after the French town in Aix-En-Provence, the menu is meant to reflect the “laissez-faire” attitude of the European dining experience. Exposed brick walls, a wood fired oven, and an open chef’s kitchen create a warm and buzzing dining environment for any occasion. Attached to the main dining room, is our own bohemian watering hole, Bar X. Bustling with live music, vibrant colors, and a glowing backlit onyx bar, Bar X is the perfect spot to unwind and enjoy a dining experience rooted in the senses.

For over 70 successful years, the Ponce family has owned and operated the Conch House Marina Resort. The Ponce family one of the oldest families in the United States and has been in St. Augustine for over 400 years. The property was purchased in 1946 by Jimmy Ponce and his wife Jackie, and was once the Coast Guard gunnery station. The business started as a 4 room hotel, called Ponces By The Sea in which the family lived in one room and rented the other rooms to guests. The Ponce family has been in the hospitality business for over 150 yrs, and it started with Ponces Sweet Shop which used to be in town behind the old opera house. The next venture was the Old Dutch Tavern, fashioned after a dutch windmill. (A picture of the Tavern can be seen inside the Captain's Room Bar). The Tavern was located just west of the Conch House on Anastasia Boulevard, just before the bridge of lions. If you ask any of the old timers, they would tell you this was the place to go. Originally opened as a gambling house, until gambling was outlawed, it became a restaurant and bar serving fresh seafood and the best fried shrimp. They still use the fried shrimp recipe as their great grandfather did back then. Visit The Conch House, a piece of St. Augustine history.

There are so many things to see in Jacksonville. Here is a list of my favorites
During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, many people came to Florida. Some, like Zephaniah Kingsley, sought to make their fortunes by obtaining land and establishing plantations. Others were forced to come to Florida to work on those plantations, their labor providing wealth to the people who owned them. Some of the enslaved would later become free landowners, struggling to keep their footing in a dangerous time of shifting alliances and politics. All of these people played a part in the history of Kingsley Plantation. https://www.nps.gov/timu/learn/historyculture/kp.htm

In 1589 Italian cartographer (mapmaker), Giovanni Battista Boazio published his map of the raid of Sir Francis Drake on St. Augustine three years earlier. The map is the first documented archival reference of a wooden watchtower at the end of Anastasia Island. The watchtowers were erected by the Spanish crown during the building of the Castillo De San Marcos to keep enemy ships from taking Anastasia Island. The watchtower at the north end of the island eventually became the St. Augustine Lighthouse, and the one at the sound end became Fort Matanzas National Monument.

Home of Harriet Beecher-Stowe. Yes, that is correct. One would not expect her to come to the South so soon after the Civil War, but she chose Mandarin as her winter home in 1867. She first assisted her son Frederick as he began a cotton farm operation at “Laurel Grove” (now Orange Park) in Clay County. They had to row across the St. Johns to pick up the mail in Mandarin, and it is said that she fell in love with the area and wanted it for her winter refuge. Though she was not welcomed by all in the area, in 1873 she wrote, “I came to Florida the year after the war and held property in Duval County ever since. In all this time I have not received even an incivility from any native Floridian.” Her “cottage” was on the river just east of the location of today’s Mandarin Community Club. It became a meeting place for Bible studies taught by her husband Calvin, often meeting on the large front porch facing the river. Oranges from her grove were shipped to the North on the local steamships. She was very active in community life. Her family helped organize the Episcopal Church of Our Saviour, and she was instrumental in convincing the Freedman’s Bureau to build a school for African-American children in Mandarin.

The Ancient City, St. Augustine, is the oldest city in the United States and founded by Don Pedro de Aviles of Spain in 1585. Each year visitors come to explore the more than four centuries of history, exquisite architecture, beautiful natural scenery and pristine Atlantic Coast beaches. Among those visitors are those with an affinity for apparitions and the paranormal—because inside the walls of the historic buildings, along the cobblestone streets and lingering among the people, there are many spirits of those who’ve lived and died here, those who’ve chosen never to leave.
