Wineries & Breweries

El Dorado County has are 50 wineries, most of which are located within a 20-mile radius of Camino. We also have several breweries and probably have the first farm brewery in California.
Great place to just hang out. Jack Russel has beer, hard ciders & sometimes they even have meads. On weekends they will usually have a food truck there too!

Visit all the local farms in the fall to get the full experience of Apple Hill. We have everything from apple donuts (Rainbow Orchards is the best) to apple pies and every conceivable apple delight in between! High Hill is the biggest (and can be crowded) but be sure to visit some of the more secluded farms for a more relaxed experience.

Slab Creek Reservoir is off the beaten path and can be an adventure to get to. It is a narrow lake in a very steep canyon and is deep and cold. It is a great lake to kayak or canoe on since there usually are no motorboats on the lake. The dam is located about 3.5 miles away and requires traveling on a dirt road for at least 1.5 miles. (Please note, the roadway to this lake may not always be open.) If you want to continue to the lake shore (from the dam parking area), follow the single lane road that goes up the hill to the right of this parking area. Please NOTE: this is a one-lane road and if you encounter someone coming in the opposite direction, someone will need to back up to get to a safe place where you can pass each other. This road is NOT for the faint of heart!)

Historic Downtown Placerville or Old Hangtown has many shops, eateries, and historic places to see. There are some great restaurants including Independent, Bricks, Amore Mio Italian Bistro, Bene's!, Cascada, HeyDay, and Farm Table. There is a museum, the oldest hardware store west of the Mississippi, and the Hangman's Icecream Bar. Visit the Liar's Bench if you're looking to explore a local dive bar.

Neighborhoods

Camino was originally a "mill town" that surrounded the Michigan California Lumber mill that closed in 2009. There are still many small "mill houses" near the center of town. However, there is not much to do in the town, proper. There is one (good) restaurant (The Forester), a small hotel, a post office, an auto repair shop and that's about it. However, Camino is the origin of Apple Hill which means there are 50 apple farms and Christmas tree farms in the area, along with at least 25 wineries spread out in the foothills surrounding Camino.

The Forester makes some great German dishes (Jagerschnitzel is my favorite!) and has other good pub food. They have a small back patio that is nice to sit ion when the weather is nice. They have beer & wine, but no cocktails. This is a favorite place among locals.
