Schools & Sports

Hilton and it's surrounds are host to a handful of the Country's elite private schools. A few being Hilton College, Michaelhouse, St Annes, Cordwalles, Cowan House, Clifton, St Charles and St Johns. For parents or visitors to the area, these schools have a fabulous calendar of events, guaranteed to keep you occupied and entertained for hours!
Hilton vs Michaelhouse. One of the most anticipated clashes on the school rugby calendar and it generates massive support. It's no longer a blankets-on-the-ground affair, it’s an event where parents bring gazebos and comfy chairs as they gear-up to watch this nail-biting battle. Shouting from the sides include war cries to chanting, displays that involve the schoolboys competing with one another in choreographed movements, African drums and music. A special feature is spelling the names of their respective schools with their white shirts by opening their dark blazers - one side always trying to out-do the other. “It’s a competition within a competition and the parents are the sole judges.” - Evan Brown.

The Tatham Gallery, which is located opposite the Pietermaritzburg City Hall, was built in 1903 and continues to be one of the most significant art museums in the country, because it showcases such a diverse collection of pieces. There are permanent exhibitions that include works by local and European artists. The art that comes from KwaZulu-Natal enjoys its own special space, where these nearby artists can enjoy some excellent exposure. Entrance is free, which is an added bonus.
