Hanoi's taxis

Hanoi's taxis have meters, but not all drivers like to use them. Working meters cost about VND10,000 to VND15,000 for the first two kilometers, then about VND8,000 per succeeding kilometer. The trouble with taking a taxi is not all of them are well-versed in English, and some will try to impose a flat rate for your trip instead of relying on the meter. Even when they use the meter, some of them will have defective meters that run too fast!

Book a Grab Car in Hanoi

If you have Grab app on your phone, that’s great. If not, you have to download the app in order to book a car. Noi Bai Airport has free wifi everywhere so it’s easy to do so. However, remember you need to pay them the 2-way gate fare of 30.000 VND (1.5 US$). Choose a proper pick-up and drop-off point to avoid communication issues. If you decide to use Grab, you won’t have to exchange money at the airport since you can pay by credit card.

Cyclo

By far the most unique way if getting around Hanoi, or three-wheeled bicycle. A front seat will be enough for a maximum of 2 people. However, cyclos only go around Hanoi Old Quarter and you cannot find it anywhere outside this area. Cyclos are only used for exploring the Hanoi Old Quarter. If you decide to take a cyclo, make sure you pay between 100.000 – 150.000 VND per hour (4.6 – 6.9 US$) riding around the Old Quarter.

Renting a scooter

may be an option if you want a little more flexibility to your travel around Hanoi. Many guesthouses or hotels can get their guests a motorbike to rent for about $5 per day. Take note that you'll need to get a local driving license before you can rent a motorbike or a car in Vietnam: visit the Hanoi Department of Public Works and Transportation to get one. Also, do note that newbies shouldn't attempt Hanoi's chaotic traffic; the rules of the road do not exist along the city's streets, and a shaky new driver will only end up injured or worse.

Bus Lines

If your accommodation is not near the attractions of the Old Quarter, there are ways to get there. You can catch the bus lines below. I recommend avoiding peak hours (6:30 AM – 9 AM and 5 PM – 7:30 PM): To Hoan Kiem Lake: 04, 14, or 36 To O Quan Chuong Gate: 03, 11, 14, 22, 18, 34, 40 To Dong Xuan Market: 31 The usual bus ticket fee is 7,000 – 8,000 VND. You should write your destination on your phone. This way you can show him once you get on the bus. You will need to be careful whenever you get on and off the bus as the driver here pulls away really quick.
