As one of Ballito’s most popular beaches, Willard Beach promises plenty to see and do. It is the main beach of the town and is a prime getaway for the whole family on a balmy KwaZulu-Natal day. In recognition of its educational value, gorgeous setting, safe conditions, and excellent amenities, Willard has been awarded as one of the few Blue Flag beaches in the country. This is a prime surfing beach and hosts the annual Ballito Pro; a leg of one of the world’s largest surfing competitions (presented by Billabong). Surfers can head out to four main surf spots (Bathers, Bog, Sunrise and Surfers) to test their skills and forget about the worries of the world. The tidal pools are ideal for families with little ones that want to splash around in calm waters with no waves. More than this, Willard Beach is a beach where everyone has fun. It is vibrant, always abuzz with teens, little ones, couples and families that are making the most out of the KZN sunshine and fresh coastal air. The nearby skateboard park is massively popular. There are shops and restaurants at Willard Beach that invite visitors to relax, indulge in some retail shopping, or enjoy a meal with some of your favourite people. The promenade is a hotspot for joggers, those with prams, and dog walkers. Life guards and shark nets mean that Willard Beach is fantastic for swimming, body-boarding, stand-up paddling, SCUBA diving, and snorkelling too. The warm waters are a massive bonus, making this the perfect beach holiday destination almost all year round. Ballito is a resort town on the Dolphin Coast, and is about 45 minutes to an hour from Durban’s city centre and its international airport.

The Ballito Cable Ski Park is maxed out with exciting sports and adventure. It is all about family fun, with a generous dose of adrenalin for those that want to test their limits. This park is designed to cater for people of all ages, and has excellent facilities for a full day out. The water sports make use of a cable ski, which is 350 metres long and nine metres high. There are slider rails and kicker ramps for more experienced skiers. THE BALLITO CABLE SKI PARK OFFERS •Wakeboarding – get pulled along on a wakeboard from cables above you (as opposed to a boat in the water). •Fly-boarding – try this awesome sport that propels you and your board into the air using the power of water. This is hydroflight at its best. •Lake jumping – soar through the air on BMX bicycles. •Knee boarding – hold on tight as you cross the lake on your knees, pulled by the cable system overhead. •Segway tours – for some land-based fun, explore the area on a nifty little segway, which is fun and easy to use. The manmade Lumo Beach is small, but offers everything that makes a beach special – including inviting waters, white sands, and umbrellas. A lifeguard is on duty and there are safe swimming zones clearly laid out for swimmers. The ski park also has a café with hot coffee, cold soft drinks, pizzas, burgers and sandwiches. It is great for a mid-adventure refresher, or for parents that prefer to enjoy the more sedate side of life while the others do their thing. The park is accessible to wheelchairs and those with physical disabilities, and there are clean ablutions. Although Granny’s Pool is a tidal pool on the larger main beach of Salt Rock, it has earned its status for being the spot of choice for families that are after safe and fun swimming. It is shallow (about waist high to an adult at its deepest spot), enjoys the warm water of the Indian Ocean, and is a little more secluded than the main beach areas. Granny’s Pool has a rocky section and a sandy section, making it a real delight for little ones to both swim and explore. Even the not-so-little will love having a quick dip and cooling down here, while the ripples of the waves that break on the outer rocks of the beach are relaxing. This tidal pool is situated on the main beach of Salt Rock, which is a swimming and surfing hotspot. Stand-up paddling and catching waves on a body-board are also very popular here, thanks to consistently good conditions. Lifeguards and shark nets mean that this part of the KwaZulu-Natal coastline is relatively safe for those heading into the waters. The beach itself is fabulous for beach games, runs, walks, picnics, or just enjoying a good book. It is quieter than many of the other Dolphin Coast beaches, and this entire stretch of the South African coastline is known for its sunny conditions that last almost all year round. Salt Rock and Granny’s Pool are only about 20 minutes from the King Shaka International Airport in Durban and 15 minutes from the holiday resort town of Ballito. The entire area is home to loads of great restaurants and shops, making it perfect for a summer vacation or weekend away.

Salt Rock Beach is the main beach of the little town of the same name, which is perched along the coast of KwaZulu-Natal. It is idyllic for its palm trees, white sand, and warm turquoise waters. And, thanks to its being protected by shark nets in the water and lifeguards on the beach, it is a fantastic choice for families and those that want to cool off in the temperate waters of the Dolphin Coast. Although the waters are fantastic for swimming, they are also irresistible for surfing, body-boarding, hydrofoiling and stand-up paddling. The warm sands lure sun-worshippers to spend hours bronzing up (lathered in a good quality sunscreen, of course), or for couples to walk hand-in-hand and enjoy the salty sea spray. Children love playing beach games and building castles in the sand too. The palm trees provide welcome shade for picnics, reading a good book, or catching up with friends and family. The reefs just off Salt Rock Beach are alive with marine animals and fascinating plant life. Snorkellers can bring their gear and dip just below the water’s surface for some great sightings. Qualified SCUBA divers can also head into the deeper waters and see what beautiful fish, anemones, starfish, and much more await them. Because there are so many fish around the reef, Salt Rock Beach is also very popular for keen fishermen (and ladies). The large tidal pool, called Granny’s Pool, is perfect for little ones, as it is calm (with only a few ripples caused by the waves crashing on the rocks) and shallow (about waist high to an adult at the deepest spots). There are ablutions and showers available at the beach, which are ideal for surfers and families with little ones after a long day in the water. There is ample free parking. The town of Shark Rock is just north of the holiday hotspot of Ballito, about 45 minutes from the centre of Durban, and about 25 minutes from its international airport.

EXPERIENCE SHOPPING AS IT SHOULD BE Lifestyle Centre is not simply convenient, but a real and meaningful extension of locals’ lives. With its relaxed atmosphere and generous ratio of outdoor to indoor space, Lifestyle Centre has been at the heart of Ballito since 2003. Pop in to one of our stores, take a table outdoors in Eat Street, or wander the artisanal food market, and you will see the way friends hail friends, and friends of friends. You will find no trace here of the big city frown. It’s not as if Ballito folks have all the time in the world – they’re business owners, deal makers and parents, too. The difference lies in the value they attach to family, community, and making the most of their beautiful surroundings. Lifestyle Centre draws inspiration from these priorities. Lifestyle Centre is a place where you will always find people living life the Ballito way.

NDLONDLO REPTILE PARK What makes us really different, is our hands on and personal approach. With guided tours that can be structured around the relevant age and curriculum (from pre-primary to high school) to maximize the learning experience whilst still keeping it interesting, and hands on demonstrations giving the children a chance to interact with the reptiles. Our aim is really to educate and about the dangers and beauty of these creatures whilst eradicating the myths at the same time. People will leave knowing the difference between venomous and non, between a spotted bush snake and a green mamba, and how to react in a dangerous situation with a snake as well as (and more importantly) how to avoid a dangerous encounter. The park also gives courses on basic snake handling, first aid and how to handle snake encounters. All Guided tours that are offered, are facilitated by the most knowledgeable and professionally trained tour guides, we specialize in educating people about indigenous snakes.
