Theatre: Highlands Summer Festival

2023 Season ... can you feel the love? The summer run opens with the four-star musical She Loves Me. George and Amalia, co-workers in a cosmetic shop, haven’t been getting along. Their adversarial relationship continues even though they have been exchanging letters after they both responded to a lonely-hearts advertisement. You will love the characters and songs in this award-winning musical. An intimate and touching show, featuring music by Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick (Fiddler on the Roof) and book by Joe Masteroff (Cabaret). Considered by many to be the most charming musical ever written, She Loves Me is a warm romantic comedy with an endearing innocence and a touch of old-world elegance. The Mikos Lazlos play Parfuemerie, on which it is based, has inspired many adaptations, including the beloved film You've Got Mail starring Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks. Set in a 1930s European perfumery, we meet shop clerks, Amalia and Georg, who, more often than not, don't see eye to eye. After both respond to a "lonely hearts advertisement" in the newspaper, they now live for the love letters that they exchange, but the identity of their admirers remains unknown. Join Amalia and Georg to discover the identity of their true loves... and all the twists and turns along the way! She Loves Me was nominated for five Tony Awards in 1964. The 1993 Broadway revival won the Olivier Award for Best Musical Revival, the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Revival of a Musical and the 1994 Critics Circle Award for Best Musical, while the 2016 Broadway Revival snagged the Tony Award for Best Scenic Design (beating Hamilton!). Opens on July 3 for ten performances. Recommended for ages 10 and up. We encourage you to use your judgment based on your child's age and maturity level. Ninety-one-year-old political activist Vera Joseph’s solitary existence is entirely shaken when her grandson, Leo, appears at the door in the middle of the night. Leo is fresh from a cross-country bike ride and assures Vera that he won’t stay long. Leo, however, is in crisis, confused by an on-again, off-again romance, furious with his mother’s incessant meddling, and grieving deeply for his best friend and biking partner, Micah, who is recently deceased. While Leo seeks solace in his grandmother, Vera finds companionship in another person for the first time since the loss of her husband, Joe. A finalist for the 2013 Pulitzer Prize in Drama, Amy Herzog’s 4000 Miles is a compassionate, intimate, and frequently funny play that examines the love of the family we can choose, the family we can’t, and the healing power of trust Opens on July 17 for eight performances. This production contains mature themes and strong language. Recommended for ages 13 and up. We encourage you to use your judgment based on your child's age and maturity level. Dan Needles and Ian Bell take us on a crop tour of today’s rural Ontario with all new stories and songs. Ian is a founding performer for CBC’s Vinyl Café and Dan is the author of the beloved Wingfield Farm stage comedies. Together they explore the rural-urban divide that puzzles so many newcomers to the country. Prepare to be coached and instructed in the ancient rituals by two experts in the field. Opens July 26 for three performances. Recommended for ages 10 and up. We encourage you to use your judgment based on your child's age and maturity level. Inside Mrs. Joe Bradshaw—a 42-year-old mother of two grown children—is the former Shirley Valentine longing to get out. Her hope and self-confidence are badly shattered by school, marriage, and life, she is reduced to talking to the kitchen wall while preparing her husband’s evening meal—to be on the table as he opens the front door every night. As she sips a glass of wine she dreams of drinking in the country where the grapes are grown. Her feminist friend offers her a holiday in Greece and, with great trepidation and a lot of forward planning, Shirley seizes the opportunity and goes, encountering a totally new lifestyle. Shirley, breaking out of the mould cast for her by society, is brilliantly shown with humour, warm sympathy, and human insight. This hilariously engaging play was a hit in London and New York, performed by Pauline Collins, who later recreated her role on film garnering an Oscar nomination. Playwright Willy Russell also wrote Educating Rita and Blood Brothers. Opens July 31 for five performances. This production contains mature themes. Recommended for ages 13 and up. We encourage you to use your judgment based on your child's age and maturity level. Early Morning Rain! featuring Leisa Way and the Wayward Wind Band takes audiences on a musical journey that tells the story of Canada’s own Gordon Lightfoot. His songs are known worldwide, and his remarkable career spans over half a century. Lightfoot is a legend, in his own lifetime. After 50 years of hit song-making and international album sales well into the multi-millions, it’s safe to say that legendary singer-songwriter Gordon Lightfoot resides atop the list of all-time greats with hits like “Early Morning Rain,” “If You Could Read My Mind,” “Carefree Highway,” “Sundown,” “For Lovin’ Me,” “Canadian Railroad Trilogy,” “Ribbon of Darkness,” “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald”, “Did She Mention My Name” and “Beautiful,” just to name a few. Lightfoot has recorded 20 albums, has 5 Grammy nominations, 17 Juno Awards, and earned 16 number ones, 18 top 10s and 21 top 40 hits. Other great artists who have recorded his songs include Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Eric Clapton, Hank Williams, Jr., Judy Collins, Barbra Streisand, Peter Paul & Mary, Glen Campbell, and Toby Keith. In 2012, Lightfoot’s legacy was further enhanced when he was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and decorated with the Governor General’s Award and the Companion to the Order of Canada Honor of Merit. In 2023, Gordon Lightfoot turns 85, and this concert is a phenomenal way of celebrating this Canadian legend’s birthday! Opens on August 6th for five performances. Recommended for ages eight and up. We encourage you to use your judgment based on your child's age and maturity level.

Haliburton County Snowmobile Association http://hcsa.ca/ From the website: We invite you to enjoy the HCSA’S 370 kilometers of groomed, signed trails with some pretty spectacular scenery along the way. You’ll ride everything from an abandoned rail line, to dense bush, to hydro corridors and the only trail through Algonquin Park. We are a partner in the world famous RAP (Round Algonquin Park) Tour, Snow Country Snowmobile Region, and a member of the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs. Haliburton Highlands Golf Course Peter and I have played this 9 hole course many times. I like that is 9 holes and shorter yardage. The website is right on when it describes it as scenic. We often take pictures at the 8th hole tee which overlooks the lake. It is about 15 minutes from Deerwood. https://www.haliburtongolf.com 3180 Kashagawigamog Lake Road Phone: 705-457-2233 From the website: Nestled amongst the towering pines and rolling hills of beautiful Haliburton Highlands, the heart of cottage country, this 9 hole golf course is one of the area's oldest golf courses, dating back to 1932.The short yardage causes golfer to make the mistaken assumption that this is an easy track. Those familiar with the course know that the uneven terrain, hidden hazards and often obscured greens combine to create a challenge capable of testing the lowest handicap golfers and thus can be enjoyed by golfers of all levels. ….with a fully stocked pro shop, licensed clubhouse and patio with a beautiful view.

http://www.thepeppermill.ca/ Best place to go for a steak dinner….always great! I have also had the Louisiana Shrimp Fettuccine and it was delicious! Located on Hwy 35 about 15 minutes from Deerwood From the website: Warm and comfortable, this all-occasion family-style steak and pasta house delivers a just-off-the-dock relaxed atmosphere with rich pine post and beam accent, pine and Cherrywood tables and an inviting bar.
