Canalside is the prime place to see the progress of "the Buffalo Renaissance." In the winter, you can skate on the extra large outdoor rink that traces part of the original path of the Erie Canal. In the summer, you can stroll the boardwalk, rent a kayak, take a boat tour, see a concert, and see what else is in town that weekend.
