Parks & Nature

Hiking and activity suggestions below. The mountains and lakes are stunning, great hiking. On a driving tour I recommend taking the Moose Wilson road in or out of the park. Schwabacher's Landing and Snake River Overlook are beautiful stops on the outer park road. On the inner park road take the North Jenny Lake scenic drive. Scenic shuttle boat goes across Jenny Lake in the summer. String Lake is great for swimming and Colter Bay also has a swim beach! Taggert/Bradley Lake - Moderate hike to Taggert, beautiful scenery and gorgeous lake at the end. About 4 miles roundtrip, to Taggert Lake and back. Options to go longer. String/Leigh Lake - Easy to moderate hiking along these lakes. Can go as far as you like and turn back. About 8 miles roundtrip to the end of Leigh Lake and back. Jenny Lake/Cascade Canyon - Very pretty, very crowded. Can take boat across Jenny Lake or hike around. Moderate and varied options. Quick walk to Hidden Falls from shuttle boat or can go longer into the canyon or around lake. Check in visitor center for mileages. Death Canyon - Beautiful canyon, moderate trail, less busy than Jenny Lake. Go as long as you'd like.

Hiking suggestions below. Great place to hike, let your dog run, ski, watch for wildlife, camp. Road is groomed in winter for xc skiing. Teton Canyon/Alaska Basin trail - drive to end of road, hike in as far as you'd like. Gradual, moderate trail, nice flowers in the summer. Sheepbridge trail - park in the first parking lot you get to, do not go onto the canyon road past the gate. Cross the bridge over the small creek on the right hand side of the parking lot. Cut across a meadow to the forest. You will cross a large bridge and then the trail will turn left and go up canyon. Only a few miles, easy, family friendly. Couple places to stop at the creek. Mill Creek trail - Same parking lot, first one in the canyon. But on the left side. Moderate to steep trail but in only a couple of miles you reach a stunning, big view of the Tetons. This is the shortest way to get views of the backcountry.

Local, well loved river. Easy to float with tubes, kayaks, canoes, drift boats. Great place to cool off in the summer. Can rent boats in town at Teton River Supply and several companies are available to shuttle your car. Handful of put ins and take outs in the valley.

Sightseeing suggestions below. Yellowstone is huge! Worth the visit but be prepared for a big day. The park roads are shaped like a figure 8, with a top and bottom loop. If you could only do one section most people would do the bottom loop. If you can, both are wonderful. Bottom loop highlights - Norris Geyser Basin (one of my favorite places in the park to walk on the boardwalks), Old Faithful, Hayden Valley, Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, Grand Prismatic, Artist Paint Pots. Top loop highlights - could also do Norris and Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone with the top loop, Mammoth.
