Located upstairs on Ponsonby road this is a food hall with some delicious international cuisines. The vermicelli salad (Bun Chay) from the Mekong Vietnamese is one of my favorites, the roti curry from one of the Malaysian shops is pretty darn good as well. You can also grab a beer or wine from the drinks shop.

Depot opens at 7am, the coffee is great, haven't tried the breakfast menu.... But the night time eats are CRAZY GOOD! a great place to order heaps and share it all. They don't take bookings so don't hit this place starving at peek times. Order the sliders, they could change your life. If they still have the Hapuka belly, go there. Freshly shucked oysters, why not? We're celebrating. Honestly anything you get is going to be a little bit of heaven. Oh, and there's wine on tap. If you have tickets to a show in town, this is where you start your evening.

"Barilla is synonymous with dumplings in the 09—it’s a true classic and serves some of Auckland’s best dumplings. Boasting two restaurants on Dominion Road, Barilla is renowned for their perfect dumplings that come in lots of 20 (!), and their signature service. But let’s be honest, you’re here for these delicious morsels, not silver service. You’ll wanna hit Barilla with your whole squad to maximise their long list of dumplings options. Try them steamed, it’s a revelation and well worth the extra buck." Cheap and delicious!

Open on Sundays, this (mainly food) market is a good 30 min drive from CBD. Lots of parking and space to lounge and sit and for kids to run around. The market itself has a good variety of food - the buffalo mozzarella, the empandas and alfajores, the coffee, the heirloom vegetables, or a venison hotdog and the organic grape juice are just a few suggestions of things to try. Horse rides for the kids. If time isn't an issue take the coastal road back to the city with plenty of stops along the way.

"Ten years of twisting beer tradition for a good buzz sensation. Visit our Biergarten and cosy up for a Winter beer and a feast." A bit of a drive but once you get there its a little oasis. Its started off as a little onsite craft brewery that has developed into a great place to meet up with some friends for some beer tasting, grab some great food and listen to some live music (on the weekends). Its a good idea to book a table. There is a playground for the kids, indoor and outdoor seating.

"At any given time there are a series of cocktails on tap — probably the ‘Storm in a Bucket’ (Demerara rum, gold rum, lime and ginger) and the ‘Puncha-rillo!’ (tamarillo, spiced umeshu and dry cider) amongst others. The highballs are a flavour-infused take on the three-ingredient classics, and wines are all natural or as biodynamic as possible and will likely be on high rotation. As for the bar snacks, well they’re worthy of coming in for alone. Designed to be salty and classically European (i.e. perfect for drinking) you’ll find a fair bit of cured meat mixed with pickles, cheese and delicious toasties including one with beef bresaola, sweet gerkins and beer mustard" - review by Denizen

"Imagine walking through a park and suddenly seeing 20 massive colorful cubes raising from the ground. Or, seeing a red trumped-shaped object of a few dozen feet long placed at the top of a hill! Although, it feels very much like Alice in Wonderland, this place is as real as it gets and it’s right in Auckland, New Zealand. Over 700 acres of hills, field and woods turned into a park. Muriwai's gannet colony is a one hour drive from the centre of Auckland. Next to the car park, a short walking track leads to a viewing platform right above the main colony area. Out to sea, the colony continues on two vertical-sided islands. About 1,200 pairs of gannets nest here from August to March each year.

One of my favorite beaches in Auckland, white sands for miles & miles. Old Pahutakawa trees. Quite a hike from Auckland but for me totally worth the drive. If you have kids, there is an estuary which can be a great place to play (not on outgoing tides). Great places to stop along the way, Matakana markets if you time it right, on the return a pizza & beer at Leigh sawmill. Its a good idea to take food & water (or purchase it in Matakana), there is a shop at the camping ground if you need more supplies.

Spectacular black sand beach, great fresh air, walk up Lion rock. Breathtaking. Great swimming but be aware of rips, swim between the flags! Cafe & shop all there.

Maybe a bit more walking than hiking, there are lots of options for amazing walks out at Piha, a lovely manageable walk up to the waterfall for a swim (if you love ice cold water) or just a spot of nature gazing. If you're in for a bit more huffing and puffing, head over to Whites beach.

World-renowned Waitomo Glowworm Caves is somewhere I haven't been but I'm told its pretty amazing. The husband floated through the caves on tire inner tubes and said it was insane. The glowworm, Arachnocampa luminosa, is unique to New Zealand. Thousands of these tiny creatures radiate their unmistakable luminescent light throughout the caves. 2.5hr drive from Auckland CBD. There are loads of tours and different packages you can go on.

There is a cafe, creamery & bistro in Cornwall Park. You can also take the kids to see the exhibits or a planetarium show at Stardome Planetarium and Observatory which is next to the playground.
