This buzzing vegan eatery is vegan, terrific and very cheap! The teriyaki beef is wonderful and so is the Japchae noodles. Fair warning, the nori rolls are made with cauliflower rather than rice and tend to explode everywhere when you bit into them.

This Spanish tapas bar has brilliant food. Grab the corner table and prepare to try some incredible sherries and dishes. The menu changes all the time but some outstanding dishes include a Brik pastry cigarillo, broad beans, shaved fennel salad, and sorrel ice cream. Not cheap but worth the splurge.

Spanish ex-pat and owner Jose has put together a Spanish restaurant with wonderful hospitality and some really outstanding regional food. Order from the menu or ask for a 'feed me' $59 menu and they will keep sending dishes out of the kitchen until the table groans for a halt. Outstanding dishes include the slow-cooked beef cheek in rich gravy on a creamy mash, prawns in red wine, croquettes filled with jamon and potato, a wonderful cheese board, terrific Creme Catalan and almond torte with cinnamon and lemon zest. Seriously good.

A restaurant chain that seems to be the only Hong Kong restaurant in town. Always packed, meals start with a delicious complimentary soup. It's hard to move beyond a platter of mixed roast but the soft shell crab here is truly wonderful.

This bustling cafeteria has truly wonderful pizza and is the perfect place on a hot night for dining with friends at their curbside seating. During the day – away from the lunch crowd – it is the perfect place to sit inside and spread out at one of their generous benches and enjoy the wifi over a coffee.

Melbourne's first Italian cafe, this beloved and historic eatery is a true diner, Melbourne-style. The coffee, hot chocolate, granitas and apple strudel are all terrific but skip their cafeteria-style pasta mains. A great place to meet people before heading off for a night out.

This is seriously wonderful food with incredible ingredients, technique and attention to detail. Ballarat is full of wonderful food but we would travel the 1.5 hours it takes to get there in a car just to eat here.

This Victorian boathouse has a terrace to sip your latte and watch life on the river or you can hire a boat and float downstream in. Afterwards, go for a ramble along the Yarra River among the Redgums – inner Melbourne's only remnant woodland with trees that are hundreds of years old. Very special.

This tea room is straight out of old Hungary and Vienna. Started by a Hungarian chemist who fell in love with chocolate making, here sweet and savoury dainties are accompanied by bottomless cups of tea or coffee and champagne. You can sample their delicacies with just a small inroad – Devonshire tea, a moderate sampling of their wares or go for broke with a giant repast that demands you arrive hungry. And chocolate lovers will rejoice in a high tea that caters just for them. Check out their wonderful collection of ornate silver teapots and Russian samovars. A bit pricey, this tea salon is a unique experience in Melbourne.
