“Town Hall Square in the old town. A nice place to have a walk and enjoy some history and culture. I wouldn't recommend eating at the town hall square though.”

Kirche
“St Olaf's Church in Tallinn, the city's biggest medieval structure, took its name from the sainted Norwegian king Olav II Haraldsson. The church was first mentioned in 1267. It became one of the main churches in the Lower Town and formed its own congregation, which at first mostly comprised Scandinavian merchants and craftsmen and few Estonians. The evangelical preachings of the then chaplain of the church, Zacharias Hasse, led to the start of the reformation in Tallinn in 1523. Did you know...? *Lightning is known to have struck the tower of the church around ten times, three of which led to extensive fires – in 1625, 1820 and 1931.”

Museum
“Patarei fortress in Tallinn, part of European architectural heritage, is a Classical defensive structure that has retained its stylistic purity. This is a memorial to the victims of communism and fascism, as well as a meaningful symbol of resistance on the part of martyrs of the Republic of Estonia. The construction of Patarei sea fortress started under the orders of Nicholas I in 1828. After completion, it began operating as an artillery battery. The premises covering 4 hectares have had different functions – barracks and a prison. Patarei belongs to the Republic of Estonia. Currently, discussions on developing the complex are under way, and the entrance to the fortress is closed. Beeta promenade remains open; you can take walk along the promenade and look at the exterior of the prison on your own.”

“An old prison that has not been in use since 2002. It has been turned into a museum and it is an interesting site to witness the life between the prison walls. Book a guide in advance!”

“Picturesque Town Hall Square has been the undisputed hub of Old Town for the last eight centuries. Surrounded by elaborate merchant houses and, in summer, packed with café tables, it's a natural magnet for tourists. Historically it served as a market and meeting place, and was the site of at least one execution (resulting from a dispute over a bad omelette). Find the round stone marked with a compass rose in the middle of the square. From this spot, with a little stretching and bending, you can see the tops all five of Old Town's spires. Today, the square remains the social heart of the city, a venue for open-air concerts, handicraft fairs and medieval markets. Each winter it's home to the town's Christmas tree – a tradition that stretches back to 1441 – and a buzzing Christmas Market. In spring it hosts the Old Town Days festival, a modern version of a medieval carnival, where traditions from the Middle Ages are kept alive.”
