“Super fun shopping downtown! You will find high end and specialty boutiques beside thrift and consignment stores. Chocolatiers and bakeries, ice cream shops, salons, game shops, all sorts of stores for kids and grown-ups. Entertainment provided by the occasional street performer. It's great for low-key nightlife, and there's Farmers Market held here on the weekend mornings. Many great options for casual or nice places to eat. Grab a gyro at Greek on Cary, some frozen yogurt at Sweet Frog, or some sushi at Carytown Sushi. Then catch a movie or film festival at the Byrd Theatre.”

“Ride your bike or take a hike across a suspended bridge over the James River to this historic island in the middle of it. The views are magnificent and the history is compelling.”

“BEST MOVIE THEATER EVER. Second-run movies in Carytown for $4. Sit in the middle for better seats. This is a landmark movie palace. This place is insanely awesome.”

“Love the Japanese garden. It’s a bit of a hike from the house so pack water and comfortable shoes. Some hills. Also parking areas if you prefer to drive over. Good place to picnic.”

“Even most Richmond natives have never seen the great pyramid of Hollywood Cemetery. Civil War history may be increasingly controversial, but it's part of our history, nevertheless. If you haven't been to Hollywood Cemetery, it's worth a trip. My relative, JEB Stuart is buried there.”

“This is an authentic Turkish bakery that stone grinds local grains for its fare. This is the first restaurant that we fell in love with when we moved to Richmond a couple of years ago.”

“Expect to wait in line to order the best pies! I am a fan of their savory pies. Grab some to go and walk to the Libby Hill park to enjoy the view of Richmond while you devour your pie! ”

Museum
“Once upon a mid-night dreary ... Before you go, pick up a copy of Silverman's biography of Edgar Allan Poe ( or read the first few pages of the beside copy in our studio). You won't put it down and you won't miss the Poe Museum. In fair weather, don't miss the Poe Museum's weekly ":Unhappy Hour" on Thursdays for drinks in their ancient, eerily enchanting boxwood courtyard. The Poe museum collection is housed in the oldest residential property in Richmond, a charm of great gray stones, mortar, and slate. ”

“Amazing, relatively affordable Cuban food. Great for brunch. Plan to wait. Get whatever the waitstaff recommend. Things with huevos are amazing. Their legendary Tres Leche cake was featured on the Food Network as being world-class. https://www.foodnetwork.com/videos/tres-leches-cake-0165399 Get a limeade too. Fresh made. ”

“17 screens are showing all the new releases 3 miles away in this modern cinema that was one a locomotive assembly plant. There's plenty of free parking at the cinema or 20 bus can take you from the bus stop 2 blocks away @ Freeman and Maplewood right to the front of the theater on Arthur Ashe Boulevard. The last bus returning you home is usually around 10:45 so bus transport is only a good option for early movies. ”

“Best public park in RVA. Best place to picnic. Lovely vistas. Richmond's Central Park. A gilded age mansion and its grounds gifted to the city. I became engaged in the Italian Garden. Japanese Garden requires a lot of steps; worth the trip. Bear habitat is among the best in any zoo anywhere. If you have kids, consider the Animal Farm entrance instead of Hampton Street. I wrote the website for Maymont almost 20 years ago. Little of that probably remains. ”

Café

“The original location of this Richmond favorite is located in a repurposed gas station, across the street from a few cute clothing and vintage shops. Great coffee and a diverse menu of sandwiches. Definitely a hipster magnet and quite a scene--good people watching and lots of outdoor seating. For quieter workspace (but no menu), check out the Summit Street location in Scott's Addition; the Morris Street location near VCU has more indoor seating and a full menu.”
