Route
“Fishers Track is a bike trail starting at the National Park Railway Station, mostly downhill with spectacular scenery. This Grade 2 track is an excellent backcountry ride for those mountain bike riders with only a little experience. The 17km track begins with a short climb to a summit with breathtaking views of Mount Ruapehu, Mt Ngauruhoe, Mount Tongariro and the Retaruke Valley. The downhill section of trail is 6km long and is a beautiful ride through farmland. Allow 2-3 hours to ride from end-to-end.”

Natural Feature
“Hike to Tama Lakes (Upper and Lower Tama Lakes) from Whakapapa Visitor Centre at Ngauruhoe Place. After leaving the Taranaki Falls Walk, the track crosses undulating tussock country and alpine herbfields. Further on, the track branches to the left to Tama Lakes, while the main track continues on to Waihohonu Hut. There is a view of the lower lake (1240 metres), then the track climbs steeply to a viewpoint (1440 metres) of the upper lake. Tama Lakes occupy several old explosion craters on the Tama Saddle between Ruapehu and Ngauruhoe. There are no formed tracks down to the lakes, the descent to both is via steep gullies.”

Park
“Begins at Fishers Road, National Park Village.Walk about 30 minutes down Fishers Road to the start of the Tupapakurua Falls Track (left side of road). The track has been upgraded by the local community in partnership with the Department of Conservation. It begins with an easy 20 minute walk to the Taranaki Lookout. From this point the track becomes a back country adventure track and is suitable for experienced trampers only. The track follows a ridge and then descends steeply to a stream. There are good stands of tawa, mature rimu, miro and totara to see along the way. Climbing from the stream, the track winds its way around bluffs to a good lookout point with views of the falls. ”
