“Newcastle Island (Saysutshun) is an absolutely fabulous island to check-out for so many reasons! A quick 15 minute passenger-ferry ride from Nanaimo's waterfront bring you to this island that is alive with its First Nations heritage. The beaches that surround this island are each beautiful, the restaurant serves awesome clam chowder and other meals, along with lots of ice cream. This island is always very quiet and restful. A gorgeous spot to pass a day (or just an afternoon). ”

“This is a gem of a park. Just a pleasant 40 min walk. Want to take in the summery day sunbathing? Bring your swimsuit and a good book for lazing on the sandy, sunny beaches. Want to catch a tasty treat for dinner? Bring your fishing rod and a bucket of cookies to pass the time. Then you may like to jog around the 5.5 km scenic trail. ”

History Museum
“"The Nanaimo Museum is located in downtown Nanaimo on the traditional territory of the Snuneymuxw First Nation. It is a dynamic community facility offering diverse interpretive programming encouraging visitors to “Make a Discovery” while exploring the history and heritage of our area. The museum entered a new era in 2008. Nanaimo’s history was given new life with the construction of our facility in the Vancouver Island Conference Centre, created with the vision statement: The Nanaimo Museum will enhance cultural quality of life, anchor our community and enlighten visitors while nurturing the flow of inspiration through interactive presentation of stories and objects spanning Nanaimo’s history. Today, the museum offers award winning exhibits, popular meeting and reception spaces and a destination Gift Shop. The expanded space has allowed the museum to bring top ranked feature exhibits to our community from the Canadian History Museum, the National Gallery and the Vancouver Art Gallery to name a few."”

“From City of Nanaimo: “Maffeo Sutton Park is Nanaimo's signature park overlooking our world famous harbour. The park is a central point along the Harbour Front Walkway. The park hosts countless community special events. It is a great year round destination for walking, playground playdates and picnics. Features and amenities include access to the walking trail, Playdock destination playground (limited wheelchair access), Swy-a- Lana lagoon and swimming beach (no lifeguards), Lions Pavillion covered stage, Spirit Square, ferry access to Newcastle Island ferry, and washrooms. There are a number of public art pieces located throughout the park and along the walking trail. A planning process is currently under-way for phase two of updates to the park. The name remembers two individuals: Pete Maffeo and Joe Sutton. Pete Maffeo was a popular mayor and ice cream shop owner who was admired for community service and sport involvement. Joe Sutton was the caretaker of Deverill Square Park for many years.””
