“Hurst Castle, situated at the mouth of the Western Solent with breathtaking views of the Needles, is only a 15 minute drive away. From the car park walk along Hurst Spit with the sea on both sides to reach the castle. During the summer you can save the 45 minute walk along the Spit and get the ferry from Mudeford Quay to the Castle. Built by Henry VIII to protect the Solent from French and Spanish invasions, it was a continuously manned garrison until 1956, however the canons were never fired in anger throughout it's 410 years as a garrison.”
