“A government-funded theater that does a fantastic job celebrating Spain’s film culture. They program full seasons from the country’s best auteurs. A good place to go revisit classics on the big screen and discover obscure independent filmmakers. The Filmoteca also has a wonderful library of film-related books, videos, and magazines.”

“Beloved for its state-of-the-art 4K projector and massive screens, which must be the largest in Barcelona. Seeing a film here is such an immersive experience. I check their lineup every week because you never know what kind of jewel will show up, be it an auteur film or a black and white classic or the biggest summer blockbuster. Besides the latest 4K projector, the theater also has 35mm and 70mm projectors, so you’ll often come across special screenings like Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight in 70mm.”

“This cinema closed a few years ago but fortunately it reopened its doors. They present all of their films in their original versions, so you won’t have to put up with any overdubs. The bar is also a must-visit, with its ’80s look and feel. You’ll want to buy everything they sell, from popcorn to candy. Every now and then, they’ll broadcast live an opera or ballet at the theater. If you can catch one, do. It’s magical.”

“This little gem of a theater has a very interesting independent cinema program. It’s an old theater that was rehabilitated in 2010 with three screens and comfortable seats. They sometime hold festivals and live cultural events, and it’s not uncommon to see children’s movies playing there. They show a lot of European and international films, and it’s one of the only cinemas I know of that dubs movies into Catalan.”

“Certainly the best independent cinema in Barcelona, Zumzeig is relatively small, but it’s one of the best facilities in the city when it comes to image and sound quality. Seeing a film there is an intimate experience, very enjoyable. And they’re always screening the best independent films. At the entrance, there’s a nice bar where people sit around debating the merits of the movie they just saw. It serves good craft beer and wine, plus excellent French cheeses and delicacies.”
