Wake to birdsong in a cozy greenhouse bed in a secret garden cottage in Berkeley's best neighborhood, Gourmet Ghetto, six blocks from campus. This second-floor bedroom has a bed for two with a down comforter, a comfortable sitting area with desk, a private half-bathroom (sink/toilet) en suite, plus a private bathroom with shower downstairs, and full guest access to the shared kitchen.

Die Unterkunft
Everyone loves the safe, central, foody location, the serenity, the garden flowers, and the vibe of the people here.

This house is a 1904 wooden gem with lots of history. Quirky details are everywhere: wavy and stained glass, period wainscoting and balustrades, redwood trim, oak and fir wood floors, cool skylights and vintage dormer windows. The rooms are light-filled, even on foggy mornings. As Stevie Wonder says "Her clothes are old, but never hardly dirty." Indeed, the house is very clean, and the bedrooms have new, comfy bedding. The bed nook itself surrounds you with a wonderful skylight and windows so you can watch the sunset through the trees, see the moon at night, and wake up under the green leaves, all snug and warm in the new mattress and down comforter.

The house has three Airbnb bedrooms, each with private bathrooms. The house has a delightful, eat-in, sunny cook's kitchen, and a living room/music room with a woodstove. Given the mild climate, we heat the house just a little, but let you set the temperature of you own room with quiet, toasty, electric radiant heaters.

It is cozy living in the house, but expansive outdoors. The main house/cottage and a few micro-cottages are set in a large secret garden with siting areas, trees and trellises, lawns, flowers, and veggies. As Berkeley architect Bernard Maybeck said, "a house is a place to escape the garden when it is raining." Our secret garden is actually right in the middle of town, in the heart of North Berkeley's Gourmet Ghetto, close to everything: BART, UC campus, great food markets and a weekly farmer's market, the Cheeseboard Collective, the original Peet's Coffee, Chez Panisse, Cesar, Saul's Deli, Guerilla Cafe, and many more great restaurants. The house has a WalkScore of 92. (12 minute walk to BART, 6 blocks to UC, 3 blocks to center of Gourmet Ghetto.)

As befits a house of intellectual, freethinking patriots, the bookshelves around the house let you peruse architecture from Lautner to Muenning to Maybeck, classic and modern literature, plays from Ibsen to Caryl Churchill, sci-fi, cartoons, philosophy, psychology, religion, politics from Marx to Hayek to Bernie to Milo. Welcome to Berkeley!

Zugang für Gäste
Guests share access to the living room, kitchen, and the large garden. (Your private bedroom has its own, private half-bath with sink and toilet, plus you get a private bathroom downstairs that has the shower.)

Weitere wichtige Hinweise
There are four steps up to the property, then a 100' level brick path, then 4 steps up into the house.

There is no off-street parking. You can park on the street in any one spot for 2 hours during 8AM-7PM weekdays, outside these hours it is OK. So you have to move by 10 AM, and can return at 5pm. You can park on our street free Saturdays and Sundays. If you need to keep the car longer, you can either move it to another spot, or look for non-permit spots between 1 and 6 blocks away.

The skylight over the bed is three layers of unbreakable polycarbonate. Everyone talks about how much they love the softened sound of raindrops in bed whilst being safe and dry. There is a cloth skylight shade as well, but the bed nook is bright in the mornings with indirect light.

Children are welcome with their parents and careful supervision, as the house does not have child-safe cabinet latches, the stairs do not have safety gates, the garden has roses with thorns and potentially toxic plants such as Oleander, and fragile musical instruments abound.

We welcome men and women from all countries. We are warm, welcoming hosts who do not discriminate on the basis of age, race, sex, color, religion, or creed.

As described in our listing, we are artists, musicians, intellectuals, patriots, and avid readers. We have campaign collectibles and books from all across the cultural, philosophical, and political spectrum on display in the house.

Lage

Berkeley, Kalifornien, Vereinigte Staaten

You are in the Gourmet Ghetto so it's hard to go wrong with food, but be sure to wander up and enjoy the Cheeseboard Collective for amazing pizza and bakery goods and coffee, at their two store fronts on Shattuck. For coffee, you've got Guerilla, Phil's, and Peet's. Whether you make your coffee or tea in our kitchen, or stroll to one of these great spots, and tear yourself away from the bookstore, you can wander the tree-lined streets of the neighborhood and admire the comfortable single-family houses in the style of Craftsman, Queen Anne, Brownshingle, Spanish revival, Mid-Century, and a few small 60's apartment buildings. Up a few blocks gets you into the Berkeley hills with fantastic views, and amazing California Bohemian architecture, as exemplified by Bernard Maybeck and Julia Morgan. Local parks are amazing: 10 minute stroll gets you to Live Oak Park or Ohlone Greenway; a 20 minute hike through lush, diverse gardens and architecture gets you to Indian Rock Park or the Berkeley Rose Garden -- both have fantastic Bay views and are on a sunset lover's bucket list.

Hi! I'm Laramie, a musician (singer, composer, guitarist, bassist), cartoonist, architect/builder, mechanical engineer, and a retired computer techie. My lovely partner Wendi is a playwright, and an English instructor at a local art college. We've been doing the bi-coastal bed and breakfast for a few years now: we rent out our vacation house in Brownsville, Vermont house, and we host at our Berkeley, CA place. We are very laid back and accommodating, and we love hosting because of the kind, interesting people we meet from all over the world. We look forward to meeting you!

Während deines Aufenthaltes
Your friendly, accommodating hosts Laramie and Wendi are around the house and garden most of the time. We're chatty introverts, happy to give you your own space. You'll be sharing the household living room and kitchen. There are three Airbnb bedrooms in the house. The house has a bohemian vibe, but is generally pretty quiet, and always very, very clean. Things quiet down around 10 PM, but folks who stay here tend to go out on the town or be up late, so there will still be coming and goings until midnight or later. If you have requests or needs, please just let us know.

Our guests are kind, quiet, clean, worldly, fun people who are all attracted to chill country living three blocks from the best, most natural, sophisticated food available. Often folks are on special assignment or study at U.C. Berkeley, so we really get well-traveled, smart interesting guests. This is a real plus because on any given night folks will hang out in the kitchen or by the woodstove for fascinating conversations, music, and food; or folks might all curl up in their rooms studying up on gravitron calibration, higher math, or zen philosophy.
