"Casa Paloma" is centrally located in Abiquiu, near old Abiquiu village, Plaza Blanca, Kit Carson Nat'l Forest, Pedernal, Abiquiu Lake, Ghost Ranch (where Georgia O'Keeffe painted). Close to Santa Fe, Taos, Los Alamos, Santuario de Chimayo, Ojo Caliente, Church of Christ in the Desert, Bandelier...

Casa Paloma is in a peaceful setting, far far away from the city hub-bub & noise. Enchanting views abound & the sunsets will knock your socks off. Huge dark night skies made for star-gazing wait.

Die Unterkunft
Most of the house is available (about 1500 sq. ft) to our guests except the two locked areas upstairs, which are the owners' private spaces.

Casa Paloma has a fine kitchen for those of you who like to cook at home, saving $ on eating out each day. We offer a 5-burner gas stove w/ center grill for eggs & pancakes, a full-size stainless 'fridge & "Some of the Best water in Abiquiu" (according to Good Water reports, in Santa Fe) plus Cuisinart cookware, plenty of pots & pans & dishes & a roomy table for four/six in the dining room allow for fine dining every day. Get your groceries at Smiths, in Los Alamos, or take a trip to Santa Fe for stocking up at Trader Joe's or Whole Foods, or the many other selections there. Bodes is close-by for those items that might not have made your list.

Downstairs (where a couple might live on a single level the entire stay) offers a dining area that opens to a comfortable living room with open views to the Jemez Mtns. & Cerra Pedernal. There is a laundry room next to the kitchen, w/ washer & dryer. We also offer a clothesline, to those who prefer fresh-air 'green' drying. We use this all the time, preferring fresh clothes to the dryer. We also supply laundry detergent & baking soda, which makes for fine & natural fabric softening.

The downstairs bedroom has views to the Sierra Negra & Cerra Pedernal.
It has a double closet & a small three-drawer dresser. LED reading lights above the bed give one plenty of light for those who enjoy reading over local brochures or journaling about the day's adventures. The mattress is a comfortable queen Serta Perfect Sleeper.

A spacious adjacent bathroom has a tub & shower, also with views of the Sierra Negras & Pedernal - it's like showering in nature! A hand painted sink and hand-painted Mexican tiles add much charm to this lovely bath. Robes are included.

The upstairs bedroom is complete with spacious area for exercise (a yoga mat & a few hand weights are in the closet), a writing nook with desk & dreamy views, a cute bath with Jacuzzi tub (no shower) & a Mexican tile sink. This bedroom has a private outdoor balcony with stunningly beautiful views of Sierra Negra, Pedernal, and "Laura's Mesa" (the red bluff directly to the NW). Our night sky is spectacular! Sip a glass of wine on the gated balcony, listening to an owl in the cottonwood trees in the El Rito Bosque below or coyotes off in the distance...

Enjoy a meal on the roomy front portal, or sit undercover here & watch a distant & amazing thunderstorm over the Jemez Mountains, with triangular ruins of an ancient caldera, directly in front of Casa Paloma.

The bluff flagstone 'viewing patio', off the portal, is yet another spacious outdoor site for viewing sunrise with your favorite fresh ground coffee or for a drink in the evening, watching the sun set over Pedernal. Come out later & view the brilliant, uninterrupted constellations. The fall of 2015 Pete & I built a tiered wall around the patio & have added 'rabbit fencing' beyond that. We have added seating to enable one seeing the views from various angles (as they're everywhere!), without having to move chairs around. There is also a fire-pit to enjoy for cooler desert evenings depending on current fire danger. (Hose nearby, just in case...)

We also built a picnic table for the back patio, for shaded dining right off the kitchen for our summer guests.

HORSES: We have just added a large, fenced (4-1/2' high no-climb fencing) paddock with two stalls & a corral for folks to bring a couple of horses for trail riding in our area. Bring your own hay, grain & buckets; water is available by the barns. No horseback hunter, please - don't want the blood at Paloma. And please, no stallions, rowdy horses or cribbers!
Horse boarding is $25 per horse, per night, plus Airbnb taxes.
Muck, please, after your stay. Plenty of incredible riding awaits you!!
We have a large, circular drive to park your rig.
DOGS:
Well-behaved/trained dogs are welcome for a $50/stay per pet, plus Airbnb tax (Max. two dogs) Again, this is a beautiful area to take your canine friends on long walks with you & enjoy the sites. Please keep your dogs downstairs. There is a gate that can be closed at the bottom of the stairway. We insist that you do this to keep the carpet clean upstairs - and goat heads that come in from feet & paws from burrowing into said carpet... Have you ever stepped on a sand-spur embedded in Berber carpet?... (For this reason, please also only wear slippers, or go bare-footed upstairs. Thanks!)

Outside, there is also a fenced dog kennel for your use (approx. 7' x 12') - but keep in mind that summers are quite warm and pets exposure to the heat should be limited. We have now built a large (3,100 sq. foot 6' tall (in most places) "dog run" with a custom-built, rustic and rugged doghouse.
**Please know that coyotes do roam in this area & we strongly suggest that you keep your smaller dogs leashed when outside and on walks with you. We watch our Pom/sheltieX at all times. Wiley is never allowed to roam alone. There are also raptors, like red-tailed hawks & Great-horned owls, who just love smaller prey for a meal. Please stay mindful!

Abiquiu, New Mexico, Vereinigte Staaten

We have a beautiful, quiet & private home about 8 miles from Abiquiu Village proper, centrally located to all the going-ons in northern New Mexico. What I truly love is going for long walks right out our door, up through the Prado Valley area where we live or down into the arroyo, off the El Rito bosque below us. Birds & wildlife abound. We never know what we'll see when we take off. These are fine areas to walk your dog... Views are spectacular, so keep your camera (or art supplies) close at hand!
Bring groceries in, but - if you want to eat out - local area restaurants are the Abiquiu Inn (for finer dining), or Bodes for a terrific green chili cheeseburger, in a very relaxed manner. El Farolito is a hole-in-the-wall in El Rito (8 miles north of us) that offers authentic northern New Mexican fare at a reasonable price. And, of course, there is Mamasita's Pizza, 4.5 miles down the road, for any such cravings.
If you want to travel to Espanola (about a half hour drive), there are many restaurants from which to choose. Our favorites are El Paragua for a fine & authentic New Mexican dining experience. It's where Pete & I go to celebrate anything. We also like JoAnn's, a quaint small place with sweet people & good food at a great price. Espanola is a fun place to find your own favorites... And then there is always a visit to El Santuario de Chimayo', with it's famous 'healing dirt' (tierra bendita), of which so many people come to pilgrimage. I would strongly suggest a drive to this beautiful small & ancient church, then have a meal at the neighboring Rancho de Chimayo', with terrific food. It's a beautiful location, offering outdoor patios, as well. It has been family run for decades. Another one of our favorites... And then, of course, there is Santa Fe, full of fine food, music & festivities, an hour SE of Casa Paloma.

Pete & I have been coming to the northern New Mexico from Virginia for 15 years now, falling more & more in love with the unique ancient lands, the turquoise skies & red rock mesas. The Sangre de Christos are captivating. So a couple of years ago, we decided to buy into our dream of coming here to 'land & stay awhile'. Pete just retired: I paint & write & one does not retire creativity, so we've set up a private studio in part of Casa Paloma.

Während deines Aufenthaltes

Although we do not live in the area in spring and summer, we do have a housekeeper who takes great pride in her work & will assist you in any way she is able, including a dry-run on building a small fire in our wood stove insert, in the living room (if you are here in the fall). We also have a caretaker, who lives just beyond Casa Paloma. So if you have any problem at all, one or the other will be available. Phone numbers/contact info are given upon check-in.
We are also 'hands on' owners, enjoying coming to know guests who will be staying in our home & we will be happy to answer questions & assist you from afar. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any of your questions about Casa Paloma or the area, in general.
