We love our neighborhood because we and the other residents recreated it from the ashes, so to speak. This neighborhood is known as the Historic Western Suburb. It dates back to the early 1800's, and is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Lexington. Some houses are known to date back to 1806; and one goes back to the 1790's. It is a very eclectic area with buildings that are over 200-years old, next to ones that were built in the 20th and 21st centuries. There are many different economic levels, and ethnicities, with a good mix of renters and owner-occupiers.

By the 1970's this area was literally crumbling away, helped by the presence of all of the city's garbage trucks being parked here. Then various Lexingtonians came in, bought houses to renovate or to sell them to those that would. The garbage trucks were moved, and the neighborhood association hired an architect and builder to build new houses on the old garbage truck lot. Later the neighborhood worked with a developer to create the Artek condominium complex on Old Georgetown Street. More condos were created in the area, and many restaurants followed. So we have gone from an undesirable slum to one of Lexington's most unique and desirable urban neighborhoods. Who'd ever of thought!

Ballard Street, where the Little House is located, is one block long and runs parallel to and in between West Short and West Second Streets. It intersects with Old Georgetown on the west end, and Jefferson Street on the east end. it is surrounded by four busier streets; but Ballard is really quiet. The north side of Ballard is a subsidized senior housing complex along with one restored residence. The south side of the street has 5 residences, with the rest being garages and backyards for West Short. The residents consist of a widow, grill chef, spa manager, stained-glass artist, Kentucky Department of Revenue Investigator, horse show steward, and the head of a University of Kentucky Medical Center Biology Lab. This is why I love this little street. It is a microcosm of the working world. One of the garages has a beautiful native plant mural painted on it, and it usually houses a carpenter. The other garage is more plain, but is used for storage by a local businessman.

My wife and I are from Dayton and Cincinnati, respectively. We came to Lexington over 50-years ago by way of Louisville. I worked in the computer industry, and she taught Montessori, Special Ed, and regular primary. Currently she volunteers, and I renovate old houses, am a landlord, active in the neighborhood association, on some task forces and commissions associated with downtown, and active with the Blue Grass Trust for Historic Preservation. We have rented out houses around the neighborhood for years. Our hobby is trying to keep it all together. I have a never-ending list of want-to-do's and have-to-do's. We will not be an obtrusive host and hostess. But we will try to be responsive to your needs and suggestions. We want you to enjoy your stay, and to want to return.
