Carlekemp offers a unique opportunity to experience a magnificent Elizabethan Mansion house.

Set in beautifully landscaped gardens Carlekemp overlooks the fourth hole of North Berwick West Links, Broadsands Beach and onto the Firth Of Forth dotted with the islands of The Lamb and Fidra, an island inhabited by puffins, a lighthouse and the inspiration for Robert Louis Stevensons' Treasure island.

Die Unterkunft
Carlekemp, a magnificent mansion sits behind high walls and in four acres of landscaped grounds. The name derives from the Celtic, “crooked knoll” on which it stands and from which it overlooks the fourth hole on North Berwick West Link and on to the Firth of Forth, its beaches and islands beyond.

James Craig a paper miller originally commissioned the Elizabethan Cotswold beauty in 1898. The exterior is simply stunning but inside is matched especially in the superbly teak and mahogany panelled galleried hall with Jacobean details, proud fireplaces, ornate plaster work and simply stunning views.

In 1945, Carlekemp was converted into a school and in 1971, it was given Grade A Listed Building status. In 1977 the school closed when the building was converted into apartments. Lettings of Distinction is proud and excited that in 2020, Carlekemp will now come into our portfolio of properties where you to enjoy spending time together with family and friends in these magnificent and historic surroundings.

SUMMARY

This is the main apartment in Carlekemp and is the large west portion of the main house. It is accessed via the gatehouse along a sweeping drive which takes you round the front of the house and on to the parking area. You enter through the stunning main door, to an inner hall then into the main galleried hallway.
GROUND FLOOR

The central wood panelled galleried hall is a glorious entertaining space with seating area, fireplace and grand piano. From here you access the main drawing room an expansive room, again with ornate detailing, sofas, a television, a desk and window seat offering the most amazing views over the grounds, to the golf course, the beach and the Firth of Forth. From here you access the billiard room and back out to the hall. The grand grand dining room also comes off this room and has 2 tables; a large central dining table which comfortably seats 10 or enjoy your breakfast with a view at the second dining table by the window. The kitchen is conveniently adjacent to the dining room, fully stocked with all the necessary appliances or ask us about arranging a private chef to cook you up a special feast! Also off the main hall, there is access to the garden and to the front of the property, is the calm and serenity of the library, another fine room, again with a fire, sofas and television. The ground floor offers a huge variety of spaces for the group to gather and socialise but also there is sufficient to also enable some to break off, sit quietly and enjoy the peace and quiet or a good book!
FIRST FLOOR

The grand staircase takes you up to the first floor where all the four large bedrooms are.
The Green Room, to the front of the property, enjoys the most enormous Emperor sized bed, elegant dressing table and en suite shower room.
The Yellow Room has a King sized bed and a bathroom en suite, The Twin room has large singles and also has access to its own bathroom whilst the large Pink Master bedroom has a king sized bed, dressing table, a beautiful bathroom ensuite and a separate dressing room, from this room you can also step out on to the battlement balcony from which you can enjoy the fabulous views over the golf course and to the sea. There is also an upstairs kitchenette, which is a stroke of genius in a large house like this and makes it even easier for you to enjoy your morning coffee or tea whilst enjoying this view!
OUTSIDE SPACE

All of Carlekemps' garden is shared but the main apartment does also enjoy the privacy of the garden to the left of the building which is also directly accessed from the house. Seating areas are positioned around the grounds and one at the top of the knoll is simply the perfect spot for taking in the stunning pink sunsets. For a further explore, the walk through the wooded area to the right of the building takes you to a private gate which gives direct access to the West Links Golf course and the beach beyond.
