Meet Green-Beard's Yurt, a rustically gorgeous gem in a delightful setting. This off-grid retreat, elevation 1362 m (4469 feet), in the foothills of Alberta's Rocky Mountains, is on a 13 acre, family-run, equine hobby ranch in our stunningly beautiful, private forest. The yurt overlooks a quiet, peaceful meadow and is surrounded by trees with not another rental in sight. Enjoy the internationally acclaimed wilderness parks, Banff and Kananaskis, a delightfully scenic 55 minute drive away.

Die Unterkunft
Green-Beard's Yurt offers an open-concept, eco-friendly space designed for 1-2 guests, year round. This south-facing, woodsy retreat comes equipped with a wood pellet fireplace, a wrought iron queen bed, ensuite composting toilet, and an outdoor summer solar-heated shower.

There are covered and screened cooking/eating facilities outdoors, if you choose to pack in your own food rather than check out the many local restaurants, pubs and coffee shops in Cochrane or Canmore. A small selection of cookware, a propane bbq, a bistro table with chairs are available for your use. There is, also, a unique, bar height wood-fired grill available during times free of fire bans and a biolite firepit in winter that changes from wood to charcoal briquettes.

Guests looking for together time can walk the on-site labyrinth and spend time stargazing, or bring your bikes and take a ride out the gate on a popular cycling loop and explore scenic Grand Valley Road.

From the yurt, you are just a short 15-minute drive to the pretty, little, 'How the West is Now' town of Cochrane, Alberta. Here you'll find anything you might need: groceries, wine & beer stores, cafes, coffee shops, restaurants, pubs, Saturday farmers' markets, galleries, movie theatre, the reportedly haunted Rockyview Hotel, concerts, and rodeos. Make sure to check out MacKay's Ice Cream, a local favourite located on the Main Street.

Looking for a day trip? Visit Bankhead in Banff National Park, a winding 1-1.5 hour drive to an early 1900's mining ghost town located near Cascade Mountain. There is an informative self-guided interpretive walk.

Whether you're artists, writers or nature lovers seeking a unique, meditative retreat and photo ops, or adventurers who are happy to hike or cycle for hours, you can find what you are seeking here. Acres of a wild, boreal forest wonderland is at your disposal, grab a complimentary walking stick and you can explore right out the door at your leisure.

Private Forest

The yurt is set in our private forest which backs on to 360 acres of Crown Land full of wildlife (you will need permission from the leaseholders to hike there). While the yurt is in a forested, country location, you may hear or encounter your hosts when you walk, hike or snowshoe the property's 13 acres. Guests are responsible for their own safety and are expected to have basic wilderness skills along with a general sense of comfort being alone in nature. Green-Beard's Yurt is set in a wilderness horse ranch environment, so there may be sounds related to the care of the animals.

Green-Beard's Yurt is 686 sq. ft. of peace-filled living space with so many extra special touches, from a queen-size wrought iron bed with luxurious linens and bedding, artistically arranged quality furnishings, and a welcoming, comfortable rustic ambience.

Even though our yurt is completely OFF-GRID, don't let this scare you. Off-grid here doesn't mean you must search for an outhouse in the dark, there is a composting toilet and dressing room ensuite. You'll find a wood pellet heater that will keep you toasty warm to at least -35C, and solar-powered lights. A generator is available for extra cold nights in the winter, if necessary.

Green-Beard's Yurt is modernized and solar powered with the following amenities and features:

• Onsite Parking Space & Walk-In Boardwalk Access
• Fully Insulated / Heated via pellet stove fireplace
• Outdoor solar-heated shower for rinsing off (June 1st - August 31st)
• Indoor composting toilet
• Kitchen accessories and essentials
• Propane BBQ (year round)
• On site natural forest (hiking/walking/snowshoeing is allowed on unmaintained game trails on our 13 acres of boreal forest and woodland meadows at the edge of the Wildcat Hills)
- Seasonal labyrinth walk
- Biolite wood burning firepit (Winter & Spring) for campfire sitting, changes to charcoal briquettes during fire advisory or bans
• Unique bar height wood-fired grill for cooking (depending on local FIRE BAN status)
• Board games, cards and self-directed nature immersion experiences
- Outdoor furniture
- Screened gazebo (Spring - Fall)

INCLUDES: Drinkable bottled water, bottled wash water, dry shampoo, moist towelettes, propane for bbq, charcoal briquettes, fire starter, kindling, fire wood for winter firepit, firewood for wood-fired grill, and wood pellets for indoor fireplace are all provided!

NOTE: No running water means NO shower in winter. The composting toilet is fully functional year round.

Winter Camping: This yurt is available year round. Guests are invited to bring snow-shoes, skates and cross-country skis. Please note the outdoor shower is shut off when temperatures fall below freezing. Drinking and dishwashing water is provided. Winter weather can be challenging. Guests must be comfortable, equipped and acknowledge the inherent risks in staying in a winter foothill country environment.

Hier wirst du sein

Rocky View County, Alberta, Kanada

When you book a unique Nature Immersion Retreat, you can spend hours just hanging around a campsite playing cards. You’re probably not going to get through too many games of crib outside in the evenings though, even with your warmest toque pulled down low in the winter. The air at this elevation, 1362 m, close to the same elevation as Banff, can get a touch chilly at night. Instead, you’re going to want to cuddle up next to the pellet stove fireplace in the yurt with a warm mug of hot cocoa and play a few of the complementary board games.

In the warm season, bring your bikes for an wonderful ride on the smooth roads of the popular cycling loops at your door, or your fishing poles and hiking boots and head offsite to the many nearby local fishing holes or trails.

Walk, cross-country ski or snowshoe the gentle game trails onsite or 5 minutes away at the nearby Perrenoud Wildlife Habitat Area, rent a boat or ice fish at Ghost Lake, a scenic 15 minute drive away.

Bird watch! We are on the migratory route for a great many species, including bald and golden eagles, great grey owls, swans, cranes, blue herons... Explore the joys of the season.
