History of the property: (Optional Reading-if you’re interested)
‘The Salvator’ Self-contained Suite is situated on level one of a c. one hundred and four-five year old, 2 1/2 storey, approximately two thousand five hundred sq. feet, Double brick, Australian Federation style terrace house, in the historic inner city suburb of West Hobart. The property was built by renowned local Tasmanian businesswoman, Regina Cleary and went on town plumbing at the end of World War I. Over the last century, the property has had many different facelifts. The 70s facelift was the worst and many of the original features were ripped out, drop ceilings put in. Chipboard and fluorescent lighting throughout and ship lap pine paneling gave it a bad train station appearance. For many years it was rented by the room for students and had about fourteen different phone lines when we bought it. The suite’s original 70s look incorporated large, arched windows and arched French doors facing the street, open brick walls with a small balcony on the eastern elevation that was not plumbed correctly, so the brick walls in what is now room 2 of the Salvator Suite, were constantly wet (we had to completely demolish the upstairs front room and rebuild and hoop after hoop was jumped to fix all the water/plumbing.) In the suite there was a built-in 80s bar under the stairs (bedroom 2), a doorway where the office desk is now and a doorway into bedroom 1(where the bookcase is in bedroom 2). The entrance door, hallway, kitchen and bathroom were all dug out bucket by bucket and a new concrete slab laid for the whole suite. The upstairs master bedroom had a huge picture window and we found the
original, side-hung sash windows (rare Huon Pine and King Billy Pine) with hand drawn glass found thrown under the house! We stripped the paint off and found missing original brass sash openers from salvage yards and the original windows were put back. We custom made the third sash window for the master bedroom in the original WWI style (yet to be installed). All the other windows were custom built using sustainable local timber, or New Zealand Kauri pine, western red cedar (eastern elevation upstairs bedroom) and installed throughout the entire property. Upstairs-Original Tasmanian Oak floorboards were restored or replaced by new Tas Oak flooring. Most of the interior doors were either salvaged and stripped and rehung, or reproduction 3 panel doors bought from Uptons Salvage Yard. Groves & Castle carpentry and joinery custom built: 3 panel, cricket bat, bullnose timber and glass Federation back door, custom designed and built Federation hall timber, fretted archway, custom built $10K interior staircase in Tasmanian Oak with custom dado paneling and dado capping. Dado and dado capping in upstairs bathroom hallway. Custom built kitchen cabinetry in Tasmanian Oak. Custom built timber lintels and decorative timber arches and finials. Ten foot ceilings upstairs throughout were replastered-some solid lime plaster work done in the eastern bedroom gable, but the majority of the original lathe and plaster was so destroyed it needed to be completely removed and Gyprock/dry wall used. Some interior walls in the upstairs (reclaimed dining room) had solid plaster in great shape and remained in their original condition. The ten foot ceilings throughout the upstairs are all in the Edwardian, square-stopped style. The original chalk paint above the false, drop ceiling showed smashed original decorative air vents, parts of the original style of picture rails remained and both were recreated by expert plasterers, and timber run in the appropriate for picture rails and dado capping. The decorative ceiling roses (moldings), throughout the upstairs were bought, salvaged or made in the style. We found one stretch of original 8” skirtings and reproduced the rest of the upstairs timber work in Kauri pine, western red Cedar and Tasmanian Oak. Old double-hung sash windows and original weights, special angled sill bricks (and custom made sandstone, angled sill bricks for Salvator Suite) and decorative, rare scotia bricks were sourced through various salvage yards and classified ads. All has been replaced by their respective professional builders, carpenters and stonemasons. Your hosts/owners have spent almost eighteen years sympathetically & systematically renovating the property as close to its original state as possible, as well as bringing it into the 21st century-it is now completely re-plumbed, re-wired, re-plastered with custom built, age appropriate windows, doors, architraves, dado and dado capping, ceilings roses, picture rails, reproduction claw & ball foot bath, sourced old Hobart red bricks and angle sill bricks sourced or custom made in sandstone and much of the brickwork repointed in WWI style.
During this extensive, eighteen year renovation, we have repurposed, refurbished and sourced materials from salvage yards. That spirit has been carried over into The Salvator Suite: colonial bullnose baseboards(skirtings), Colonial style door and window architraves in red Baltic pine, full-thickness, Tasmanian Oak floor boards overlay a new concrete slab beneath, double hung sash windows and colonial style timber and glass French doors. All doors and windows and hardware, and the Old Hobart Red Bricks were sourced or bought from ‘Fragments’, Red Shed, Upton’s Salvage Yard and various demolition sites and sales. Handcrafted furniture in the suite is built by Richard and utilizes spare timber used in the upstairs renovation. The floor mirror in the master bedroom was found discarded under the house and spare Tas Oak, used to frame it. A handmade Beech chopping block with shelves and industrial wheels started life as an ancient shipping crate from Devonport, Tasmania. Plus handcrafted bedside tables and a bookcase made from spare, Tasmanian Oak staircase treads from our custom built, interior staircase.
Why is this all important? Because we are environmentally conscious, we repurpose, refurbish and reuse to save and create. We believe in restoring our small slice of history and a great chunk of our life and that of our family has revolved around renovation and learning the art of restoration and the history of this property and neighborhood. Now we
offer a slice of that to you. It is not just any Airbnb to us. So, we hope you enjoy hearing a little bit of the provenance of where you’re staying.
We offer an eclectic collection of books for guest use with classic literature, primary source Ancient Roman & Greek histories, epics, plays & poetry, mythology, and European poetry, Shakespeare, sci-fi, epic fantasy to rock ‘n roll biographies and thrillers and some books on Tasmania because it is what we dream all self-contained bnb’s would have. The bedrooms’ interior design-London chic & French provincial- reflects Tasmania’s rich French & British history & is incorporated into the design concept. It also reflects your host, Suzi’s, love of interior design, books, writing, music, art, and a passion for Ancient history.

The deep, red Baltic pine door jambs into the 2 main rooms are very wide and cover the double brick front of the original house. Salvator Suite’s bedroom 1 was originally (likely) the root and wine cellar with a ladder up to a trap door in one of the upstairs bedrooms, which is still visible in the floor upstairs. Rooms 1 & 2, the balcony, internal (owners staircase) & garage were a 1969 addition to the front of the original house and needed partial demolishing and a complete, extensive renovation-re-plumbed, re-wired, re-plastered, new concrete slab throughout the entire suite, new custom woodwork and windows throughout, re-bricked and pointed. The hallway, kitchen and bathroom were dug out bucket by bucket!

Richard (Rick) and Suzanne (Suzi) are a married couple of twenty one years. They live in the adjoining home with their two children, Julia and William who are in grades 11 & 12. They are your hosts, cleaners, caretakers and tour guides in this family-run Airbnb, opened in 2019. Their home is a one hundred and four year old, double brick, Australian Craftsman Federation terrace house, set into the side of a hill, as many houses are in historic West Hobart. Many West Hobart homes also have side-facing front doors, curiously, as does this property. Rick and Suzi bought this gigantic, dilapidated, massive renovation project in mid 2002. Eighteen years of extensive renovation and reclamation later and they decided, due to a change in work circumstances, to open up the home to guests. The ‘plan’ was to create and provide a calm, homey, beautiful, artistic, quirky and literary design and space for quiet, reflective getaways. Suzi and Rick, used their own books, games, vintage crockery , reupholstered Art Deco sofa and eclectic one off pieces, to add to the home’s and Hobart’s Colonial, European past. Rick is a print journalist/sub-editor with 30+ years experience and has resided in Tasmania for the last twenty years, where he worked as a high level editor at The Mercury Newspaper for over twenty years. He was born and educated in Sharon,Massachusetts, USA and was active in many school athletics-(track and gridiron) and spent a lot of his free time with friends playing pick up basketball and field baseball throughout his childhood. His father was a WWII Veteran and an electrical engineer and his mother was Valedictorian of Norwood High School, Norwood, Massachusetts who went on to teach Special Education at high school, completed multiple masters degrees in Special Ed. and became the head of Special Education in her region. His mother was a devout Catholic and worked extensively in her church and with various historical societies over many many years. Rick is one of six siblings, all his other siblings still reside in the north eastern United States. Rick was elected Editor of the College newspaper at UMASS Amherst, Amherst, Massachusetts. He worked as a copy editor at newspapers in Connecticut, Victorville, California, San Bernardino, California and as a copy editor on the National Desk of the prestigious LA Times. Rick and Suzi met in 1998 and married in Los Angeles in 1999. Rick then emigrated to Tasmania in 1999. Suzi was born in Portsmouth, Hampshire, UK and emigrated to Tasmania in 1975, ten days after the Tasman Bridge disaster. She is a former Royal Navy brat who spent two years deployed in Singapore with her family, where she started her schooling at the Royal Naval school, HMS Terror, Sembawang in 1969. Her family and one other hired a camper Combi van and drove from Chong Pang to Penang, Malaysia, which was a very long drive with the accomodation having three songs on the jukebox- Glen Campbell, Neil Diamond & The Beatles! How Partridge Family is that?! Suzi has fond memories of traveling to different Naval homes throughout her childhood and especially H.M.S Ganges Cadet Training School in Ipswich, Suffolk. Suzi matriculated from Hobart Matriculation College. She was a hospital trained registered nurse at the Royal Hobart Hospital. She became an Australian citizen in 1981. She began her undergraduate degree in Classics, Latin, History and Ancient Greek in 2008, now currently on leave of absence. Suzi is a self-confessed nerd & bibliophile, Doctor Who fan, music and arts fan. She is a great amateur cook, self-taught in many things including gardening and horticulture, classically trained in voice & flute, has a bad habit of reversing names, staring into the distance for ages while people are calling her name, (usually ‘muuuum’) loves natural history, ornithology, totally random facts & trivia. She also has a brother whom she doesn’t actually like very much, but he was a successful principal opera singer in Australia, who starred in Baz Lurhman’s epic production of La Boheme. So, yeah, he has to be useful for advertising, something. Rick, being a journalist, has a wealth of socio-political knowledge at the Tasmanian, Australian & International level. He also kicks butt at Rock n Roll & general trivia. He’s a map guy, a geography guru, an amazing planner and math whiz. He likes his privacy and his hound dogs. He’s also incredibly generous, talented and smart. Suzi is the one who has obsessed over the ‘look’ and the ‘feel’ of your decor, layout, books, CDs, Knick knacks, linens and arranges small customized adjustments to the colour, style and arrangement of bedding and supplies for each stay that just doesn’t show up on the lists photos, but they are there. We are an introspective, educated, quiet family who love to connect over the silly little things that make us laugh. Our home is an expression of our love of art, history, music, learning & love of Tasmania’s environment-Flora & fauna. Also, living through a major renovation project, revamping this century-old home, has given us a great perspective on work and life. You will see that this behemoth of a building still needs some slight cosmetic work, because some prior owner of the property was a 70s concrete enthusiast. But, rest assured, all major renovations are complete and NO renovations of any kind will interrupt your stay. We have three adult daughters who lived the renovations with us and have their own homes now. They can attest to how disruptive and difficult it has been over the last 17 years. However, the results have been worth the hardship, and we hope you agree. Also, we are a well-travelled family having consistently visited the US over the last 14 years- Massachusetts, Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Cape Cod, Los Angeles, Pasadena- California, San Diego, Ca.- Old Town and La Jolla, Hawaii- Waikiki Beach, New York City 3 times & a family getaway in Melbourne. Individually, Suzi has visited Sydney, Melbourne, Fiji-Coral Coast & Beachcomber Island, Japan- Yokosuka, Yokohama, Kyoto & Tokyo, England-London, York, Holy Island of Lindisfarne, Northumberland, Durham City, Sunderland-Durham, Middlesbrough-Teesside, The Yorkshire Moors, Newcastle & Scotland-Musselburgh & Edinburgh. We have driven around much of Tasmania as a family, camped on Maria Island and Bruny Island, stayed at Freycinet Lodge and camped at Freycinet National Park, stayed at Cradle Mountain Lodge and enjoyed the Dove Lake bushwalk. We have stayed at several old Tasmanian towns along the east & north west coasts of Tasmania and at the unique town of Strahan on the wild west coast, close to the World Heritage South West Wilderness. We have been to Hastings Caves & Thermal springs- large, Dolomite show caves unique to Tasmania. And many other escapades. Finally, we are generous, honest and loyal people who hope to share our stories, our love of Tasmania and our dear home with you.
