Die Unterkunft
Welcome to Hina Malu (secret garden).
Great place to unplug :)
Relax in this private studio apartment, with own entrance, and private full bath with bathtub! After a long day exploring the Park, store your leftovers in the mini fridge, tuck under the covers in the comfy memory foam bed for a sound sleep, toes warmed by the faux fireplace. Waking refreshed, enjoy the morning birds and nature serenity, or the antics of the feline residents of the property, on the private deck, sipping your morning coffee...

Many comment on the calm, powerful energy in this unique spot, bordering the prehistoric caldera, filled with mature Ohi'a and Koa trees, Hapuu Tree Ferns, and wild flowers.

Volcano lies at 4000 feet, with average outside temperatures of 53°F (12°C) and during the day and 71°F (22°C) at night.

We are a legal, hosted Airbnb, and, as our ohana apartment is part of our home, we are not affecting the housing market, and all proceeds stay local :)

Aloha is our way. We welcome all races, religions, colors, nationalities, orientations, & genders.

Lage

Volcano, Hawaii, Vereinigte Staaten

The home is one of only handful of homes on a private, well maintained dirt road, at the summit of Kilauea. There are many local, cultural and natural sights and activities within less than a mile. The main entrance to Hawaii National Park is 1.5 miles down the road, where you can visit the Kilauea Visitor Center for the latest volcanic news, walk the Desolation Trail, watch the ethereal plumes of volcanic steam rise from the Steam vents, and end your adventure gazing over the majesty of Halema'uma'u crater over a delicious meal, or hot toddy at the Volcano House.
Or you can stroll down to the end of the road where a pedestrian entrance to the Kilauea Military Camp lies just across Hawaii Belt Road, and have a drink at the bar, roll a strike or two at the bowling alley, play some pool or ping pong in their recreation area, pick up provisions at the General Store, or grab some coffee to go at the Starbucks counter.
At the foot of the road lies Volcano Golf and Country Club, where you can enjoy a round of golf at the only golf course in the world located on an active volcano!
Or you can enjoy wine tasting in paradise, at the Volcano Winery, also located in the immediate area.
Venturing out, three miles down the road is historic Volcano Village, where you can visit the Volcano Art's Center, or choose from a number of eateries as varied as the Thai food truck at Cooper Center, to Volcano's Lava Rock Café, and our favorite, Café Ono, with it's scrumptious fresh food, whimsical garden (with giant lop-eared bunny!), and attached art gallery filled with the works of local artists.
Alternately, 2 miles to the east, is the entrance to Bird Park, or Kipukapuaulu, a 1.2 mile hiking loop through a very old growth forest of koa and ohi'a trees, full of rare plants and birds.
We are located 30 miles from the shops and shoreline beaches of Hilo in one direction, and 92 miles to the snorkeling in Kona in the other, while a 2 hour drive will take you to the Mauna Kea Observatory, and an hour drive will take you through the eclectic town of Pahoa to Kalapana, where another 15 minutes will take you to Pohoiki, the new black sand beach formed by the latest lava flow
Come explore the majesty of Volcano, and the greater Big Island from this peaceful home base!

We traveled quite a bit, domestically, as a child, from Hawaii, to the mountains of Colorado, the Everglades of Florida, to sailing the Bahamas in a catamaran my family built. I have continued this love of new places as an adult as an avid "road tripper", and cherish the experiences one can have with the locals in each new place. Which is why we love to share our love of Hawaii with travelers. :)

We are a kama’aina family who travels back and forth between Big Island and Oahu (where daughter is in school), and reside in the main portion of the home. We are busy folks, and respect your privacy, but are often puttering about, enjoying the serenity ourselves, and would be happy to provide local knowledge, and recommendations for activities and dining.
Message us your questions! :)
