La Colombaia is a beautiful, rustic farmhouse, decorated in shabby chic, vintage style & featured in the Airbnb mag Feb/Mar 2019. It's in a remote, mountain hamlet in the Apennines & is the perfect spot for enjoying the countryside and relaxing. There are no shops or cafes, the nearest shops are a 20 min drive away. We're close to a working farm that raises local Chianina cattle & there's a house next door. Come for peace, quiet, tranquility, mountain walks, nice local towns & spots to visit!

Die Unterkunft
La Colombia is a beautiful Tuscan stone built farmhouse, decorated in comfortable vintage style. The house sits high up in the Appennine mountains, 2 .5 hours from Ancona, 1.5 hours from Rimini and 3 hours from Bologna airports. Be warned we are at the top of the mountain, we are the last house on the road! It's a 15 minute drive from the main road up curvy, sometimes bumpy roads, but we think you'll agree the breathtaking views are worth the drive once you get to the house! Although the house is remote, there is another house very close by, but our neighbour Riccardo is super friendly and tends to the garden and the pool. There's also a working farm nearby that raises the special white Chianina cattle. We are situated in the protected Sasso di Simone National Park, so this breathtaking, real, beautiful countryside with the occasional sights (a tractor now and then) and smells (you can sometimes smell the cows!) of a rural area, but so far no-one has complained yet!!
We also host, by arrangement only, small wedding parties and gatherings of up to 30 people. The house sleeps 16-18, we can give you recommendations for places for your other guest to stay nearby. We charge an extra 200 euro cover fee per day, per party for weddings and parties, plus a hire fee for cutlery, crockery, tablecloths, napkins and glasses of 150 euros. We are happy to help with extra items such as flowers, catering and decorations.

We've hosted family reunions and many group of friends. The house is comfortable for all ages. Everything you'll need for a fun weekend or longer stay. Lots of fun for kids, they love exploring the house and outdoors space. There's also lots of space for people to hang out, eat together, relax, explore and chat. There are two sitting rooms one downstairs with a TV, DVD player and wireless speaker. the other is upstairs with an open fireplace and furnished with antiques.
Sit out on the terrace by day and watch the ever changing spectacular view of the wonderful Appennine mountains and at night relax in the hot tub & watch fireflies and stargaze as you sip a glass of prosecco.

"In the morning we were greeted by the most breathtaking views and a fascinating house with loads of lovely rooms to explore. A brand new, well equipped kitchen and bedroom had been built since we booked which was a pleasant surprise. Lovely pristine white cotton on the beds".

"My husband thinks it is one of the prettiest swimming pool settings he has ever seen!"

"By night the only lights you see are of shooting stars and fireflies! We all highly recommend this host and house for a group of friend like us, or for families. It is extremely well equipped of cooking utensils, linens and towels which makes for an even easier holiday! "

"The house is fascinating and it almost looks like the set for a movie. I totally recommend it if you're looking for an unusual and quite place to spend some quiet time in a beautiful countryside."

The house comfortably sleeps 16 and we have an extra floor mattress if kids want to "camp out" in the attic bedroom above the kitchen.

We have also hosted disabled guests as the bottom part of the house can be reached from the side up a gentle slope. On the ground floor there is a bedroom with access to a walk in shower room, a sitting room, the kitchen & another walk in shower room(down two stairs inside or from the terrace on the flat). Please contact me to discuss the arrangements.

There are 8 bedrooms in all (2 of these bedrooms have mezzanine or attic bedrooms attached).
Bedroom 1, has a beautiful cream, distressed antique French double bed. This room has been beautifully restored to the original blue and pink paintwork and has its own ensuite bathroom.
Bedroom 2, has a vintage iron double bed and is on the ground floor. This bedroom is ideal for those in the group who can't climb stairs so easily. There are two walk in shower rooms within easy reach of this bedroom. The room is decorated with beautiful black and white Indian inlaid furniture and gives out directly to the beautiful terrace and mountain view beyond.
Bedroom 3, has a vintage iron double bed and is at the top of the house in what was the original dove cot or Colombaia from where the house gets its name. This is a lovely quiet room with views of the church bells from one of the windows. Watch your head as you climb the stairs to this bedroom!
Bedroom 4 has two vintage twin beds and looks out towards the swimming pool. In earlier times this was the school house for the village!
Bedroom 5 has two twin beds, a large vintage wardrobe and above on a mezzanine balcony floor above, a further bedroom (5a) which is divided by a curtain. This room also has 2 twin beds.
Bedroom 6 is above the kitchen and has a modern double bed and has views of the country side from both windows. This bedroom also has an attic room above (6a) which is accessed by a loft ladder and has limited headspace. In this room there's a small double bed and a single floor mattress.
These two rooms are perfect for families or friends who don't mind sharing, BUT keep an eye on the kids while they go up and down the loft ladder!

There are 4 bathrooms.
Bathroom1, is a full bathroom with an antique roll top bath, basin and a shower. This room has been restored to its original stencilled decoration. The bath is perfect for soaking in with a glass of wine!
Bathroom 2, is the en suite shower room off Bedroom 1. This is decorated in travertine tiles and has a walk in shower.
Bathroom 3, is on the ground floor off the sitting room and leading onto the garage space.
Bathroom 4, is a large newly decorated walk in shower room which leads off from the kitchen.

Sestino, Toskana, Italien

Take a well earned rest at La Colombaia situated in the rolling Tuscan hillside. Sit on the terrace with a glass of local Verdicchio, a bowl of olives in absolute peace, watch the swallows and fireflies and contemplate the magnificent mountain view.
Visit Federico da Montefeltro's masterpiece the Palazzo Ducal in Urbino, a world heritage UNESCO site. Taste some of Italy's best seafood in Ancona then head south to beautiful pine beaches in Sirolo. Or drive to the stunning medieval hill town San Leo.
Walk for miles in the stunning Sasso Di Simone nature reserve. In spring you'll discover meadows of wild orchids, in summer watch the beautiful, white Chianina cattle grazing and in autumn you might find the black or white truffles the area is famous for!
Sample delicious porchetta (pork roasted in fennel and garlic) pecorino cheese and wildflower honey at local markets. Visit local festivals, including Sestino's beefsteak festival, Monterone's bruschetta festival and the medieval festival in Piandimeleto
Make time to visit Urbania's Church of the Dead, Chiesa dei Morti, with its quirky, macabre display of 18 naturally mummified bodies. Then wander into the main square to Cafe del Teatro and buy a ice cream, pistachio and cherry highly recommended! Theres also a Ducal Palace on a smaller scale and some lovely churches and a nice little museum. On the road to Urbania from us you will spot the beautiful Barco Ducale which is being restored
( it may now be open). Built in 1465 the Barco was a hunting ground and place of relaxation for the Duke of Montfeltro. It is linked to the Palazzo Ducale by a mile of river, which was how the cavaliers and ladies reached the building!
Don't miss a meal at La Tintoria in Urbania, wonderful home cooking exquisitely decorated with fresh flowers.
Other restaurants are La Vigna di Nove in Sestino.
There's also a pizzeria and pasta restaurant in Sestino, as you approach the town from our house take a sharp right turn up the hill (just opposite the Post Office) and as you continue up you'll see the pizzeria on your left.
Baam beer a craft beer restaurant in Monte Cerignone, serving pizzas and great home made bread and beer .
There are restaurants in Belforte and Piandimeleto, but it's a while since tried them!
Or go wild swimming at number 7 of the Guardian's top 10 best wild swimming spots in Italy, (URL HIDDEN) the river with a mini waterfall is the Cascato del Sasso on the Metauro river. Drive to the medieval village of Mercatello Sul Metauro, stop for a coffee or an Aperol and then continue about 10 minutes outside where you'll see a sign for an old people's home ( yes I know it sounds unlikely) drive down this road, park outside the retirement home and continue on foot to the river which is just a few minutes away. if you walk upstream you'll come to the tiny waterfall.
Locally the first village you come to called Monterone (if you turn left at the bottom of our road) is really rather lovely. Park your car at the bottom and make your way by foot through winding cobbled medieval streets. Piandimeleto has a rather good castle and a small museum attached. Sestino is an old Roman town which also has a museum. Frontino which is about 20 minutes drive away is a lovely walled hilltop town. Urbino which is about an hour's drive away is a World Heritage site and has the magnificent Palazzo Ducale full of paintings and treasures.

The house is entirely yours, I do not live on site, however we have a lovely English couple who live nearby who also speak good Italian. They are on hand to help out at any time and will meet and if arranged in advance can meet & greet you when you arrive. Otherwise either they or I will arrange to let you know what the code is for the keypad on the door for access to the house.
