This SUKIYA-zukuri style house stands out in art and craft technique. It's in main part of the historical district in HidaFurukawa, where finding narrow streets aligned by "Machiya" townhouses with significant white walls and lattice. I'm happy to share this house I've sustained since worked at local architect farm.

Die Unterkunft
This Sukiya-zukuri* house built by combining the superb local craftsmanship and various kind of national timbers.

Sukiya-zukuri* is one type of Japanese residential architectural style. Suki means refined, well cultivated taste and delight in elegant pursuits and refers to enjoyment of the exquisitely performed tea ceremony.

Dating back to Nara Period (700AD), the local woodworkers and carpenters developed their outstanding technique in the environment with abundant forest resources, and they served their craftsmanship in the ancient capitals, Kyoto and Nara. People called them “Hida no Takumi (Hida’s Master Builders)” with respect.

Now the carpentry spirits and culture are survived yet here. Suehiro house is special and experimental one built by "Hida no Takumi" who have respect for "Suki". The wooden house built about 40 years ago might not be an historical folk house. However, the structure built by sheer persistence of "Hida no Takumi" is worth seeing.

【Rooms】
The house holds three Japanese-style tatami mat rooms, kitchen, and a bathroom on the first floor. And additional one Japanese-style tatami mat room and one free space on the second floor, and an inner courtyard. One of the room on the second floor is kept for our use as a storage.

【Futons (Japanese bed)】
Futons can be provided as needed. They are comfortable futon, hand-mede by local Futon master for your good sleep in this quite town. Layout of them is flexible. Please ask me.

Zugang für Gäste

Satoyama (里山 ) is a Japanese term applied to the border zone or area between mountain foothills and arable flat land. Literally, sato (里) means arable and livable land or home land, and yama (山) means hill or mountain. Satoyama have been developed through centuries of small scale agricultural and forestry use. On the ground that Satoyama lifestyle in Hida Furukawa was influenced from Kyoto culture, this town is not only rich in nature(mountain, river, snow, animals and etc) but also rich in culture (architecture, design, craftsmanship, food, festival etc).
