Beaches of Guardamar
Guardamar beaches are classed amongst the most beautiful and unique on the Spanish Mediterranean Coast. We boast about our 11 km. of fine golden sand beaches bordering the coastal pinewoods. Of these, 2 km. are located to the north of the River Segura and 9 km to the south. The Guardamar Sand Dunes Forest is a total of 800 hectares (almost 2,000 acres), with a maximum width of 1.400 metres, meaning almost a mile. Vegetation consists basically of eucalyptus and palm trees and other Mediterranean and introduced exotic species.
North of the River Segura you will find Els Tossals Beach, a naturist or nudist beach (Phone number hidden by Airbnb) meters long, with access from the N-332 coastal Alicante-Cartagena Road at the height of the Top Class Marjal Camping Resort.
South of the River Segura there are 7 different beaches summing up about 10 km, some absolutely natural and others fully urban at the town’s shoreline itself. From north to south they are named: Els Vivers, La Babilònia, Centre, La Roqueta, El Montcaio, El Camp and Les Ortigues. The urban town beaches are known as: Centre and La Roqueta.
Along the right bank of the mouth of the River Segura there is the Fish Exchange (Llotja de Peix) with fish auctions Monday to Friday mornings and the Nautical Sports’ Marina, located 2 km from Guardamar’s town centre.
Guardamar offer beaches of high ecological value, with 4 Blue European quality flags in ones of the most beautiful environments on the Spanish coasts.
Guardamar is at the far south of the Costa Blanca, a 30 minutes drive from Alicante Airport. It has the warmest sea waters in Spain. The average water temperature is 27 °C in August, dropping to around 20 ° C in the mild winter months. It is not unusual to see swimmers in winter, especially those coming from northern Europe. You can also sunbathe on our golden sands the year round.
Environment and Heritage
Alfonso XIII park
This forest space has 800 hectares bordering the Mediterranean coast. Originally, it was a set of moving sand dunes that were fixed planting different species such as pine, palm, cypresses and eucalyptus trees in a huge reforestation project. Starting in the late nineteenth century, the project was led by Forestry Expert Mr. Francisco Mira i Botella. Over the following three decades, more than (Phone number hidden by Airbnb) trees were introduced. He created an attractive ecological and cultural landscape of high touristic value.
Reina Sofía park
The Reina Sofia Park is part of the huge pine forest, a very short walk from the Town Hall Square. It has ponds with fish and birdlife, spacious children playground areas under the shade of the pines. The squirrels have become a symbol of the park and of Guardamar. It is a favourite meeting point for families with children. There are several popular “petanque” bowling pitches widely used by our senior residents. On summer evenings, the Auditorium of the Park hosts shows and music entertainment in what is known as “les Nits d’Estiu.” (The Summer Nights)
River Segura
The final stretch of the River Segura and its estuary (or Gola) is a unique natural environment. The existing vegetation provides resting places for nesting waterfowl such as herons, egrets, stilts, herons, gulls, grebes, moorhens and others. A noteworthy area is known as “les Voltes del Riu Vell” (The Old River’s Meanders). It is now a protected stretch of the old river bed since a new Segura river channel flows straight to the sea since the late (Phone number hidden by Airbnb) s Flood Plan.
This ancient protected stretch has been replanted with native river bank vegetation and shrubs. There is a bird observation tower near the river’s mouth. Walking and cycling excursions known as “Green Routes” have been arranged on both river banks. They connect Guardamar with towns upstream all the way to Orihuela (29 km) and Murcia (69 km.). You can also choose to discover the farmland country paths.
The Guardamar Farmalands or Horta de Guardamar
“L’Horta de Guardamar” is the name given to the traditional farmland irrigation countryside of Guardamar. It is located on both sides of the final stretch of the River Segura. It is irrigated by a medieval system of canals, ditches and draining ditches. It is made up of small properties where citrus trees and vegetables are grown, the most famous product being the unique “Nyora de Guardamar” (a small sweet red bell pepper), which is subsequently dried in the dunes and widely popular in regional Valencian cuisine.
The Hills
The hills surrounding Guardamar were reforested in the (Phone number hidden by Airbnb) s and (Phone number hidden by Airbnb) s, especially with pines. An abundant Mediterranean flora and fauna now grows there. The highest points are never 200 metres above sea level. The hills are known as: “El Montcaio”, “ Les Raboses”, “El Palleret”, “ l'Estany and El Molar”. At the foot of these hills the ancient, now dried up, marshlands are all at sea level. This means the views are spectacular from these small heights.
You will be able to gaze at all the coast from the Bay of Santa Pola, the small island of Tabarca with its village, the mouth of the River Segura and the 11 km. long stretch of beaches bordering the pinewoods all the way down to the salt lakes at the south. Orihuela –the historic capital of the district– can be seen to the west, explaining the defensive role played by Guardamar in past centuries: literally, “the Guardian of the Sea.”
The Guardamar Drylands
To the south, behind the “Montcaio” hill, we find some ancient dry lands and livestock. In the (Phone number hidden by Airbnb) s the area received irrigation water due to the elevation of water surplus on the right bank near the river’s mouth. This was carried out by the Levante Segura River Irrigation Company. Despite the presence of new, mainly foreign residents ‘urbanisations or “country residential developments”, it remains largely intact. It is a rural landscape of lemon and orange trees with vegetables and garden farming served by small irrigation ponds.
The dry lands are represented by vineyards and grain fields. In the higher areas and hills looking south there are some fantastic views of the La Mata Salt Lakes and the Mediterranean Sea, very near to the east
La Mata Salt Lakes Natural Park
The “La Mata and Torrevieja Salt Lakes” were historically known as the Guardamar Salt Lakes since they were a part of our district. They are a natural park of great ecological value for its flora and fauna. It is a resting place of great importance for migratory birds on route to Africa or back. Amongst other species, we must mention the necked grebe and the flamingo, as well as other nesting birds such as the marsh harrier and the avocet. The park covers a surface of 3,700 hectares, with much of the north shore still belonging to Guardamar’s district. There is an Information and Interpretation Centre on the coastal N-332 Road, at the height of La Mata, which can be reached by bike from Guardamar. Within the park, there is a route that can also be done on foot or by bike.
Engineer Mira House-Museum
Known as “The Forest House”, it is dedicated to the memory of Mr. Francisco Mira i Botella, the renowned engineer, his work and the history of the Guardamar Reforestation Plan from (Phone number hidden by Airbnb) to (Phone number hidden by Airbnb) On show there is a wide photographic collection, furniture and fixtures related to the reforestation of the dunes carried out under the management and supervision of Mr. Mira. The House Museum was opened as a museum on the 21st March, (Phone number hidden by Airbnb) with new exhibition halls. It also includes the original bedroom and the engineer’s office, the staircase and the Weather Station on the terrace. The building, one of the town’s landmarks, also houses the Tourist Office.

Archaeological Museum of Guardamar (MAG)
Guardamar’s Archaeological Museum is located in the “Casa de Cultura” (House of Culture), a three minutes walk from the Tourist Office and Town Hall. It includes materials from the Archaeological Department’s collections carried out in our district with local Council funds. There is an excellent replica of the Iberian bust known as the “Dama de Guardamar” (Lady of Guardamar) dating from the 6th Century B.C. You will be able to travel –in chronological order– through the Phoenician, Iberian, Islamic and late mediaeval periods.
There is an Ethnological Sector and two of the most important episodes of Guardamar’s contemporary history are described. That includes the new Town Plan, after the (Phone number hidden by Airbnb) earthquake, and the reforestation of the dunes system (Phone number hidden by Airbnb)

Guardamar Castle
Guardamar town stood on the hill known as “El Castell” from its mediaeval Christian Foundation (Phone number hidden by Airbnb) until the destruction of the town by the (Phone number hidden by Airbnb) earthquake. It was a town with streets, houses and squares. As a matter of fact, other human archaeological remains found here prove the hill was previously used by Phoenicians, Iberians, Romans and by the mediaeval Muslim Caliphate. There are some magnificent views of the surrounding districts.
Although most of the stone was used –after the earthquake– to build the new town below, on the plain towards the sea, there are some remnants still standing such as the defensive structure of the gunpowder watchtower and some late medieval paintings on walls and towers.
Saint Anthony´s Mill
It is an old water driven flour mill of late mediaeval origin. It is now rebuilt in Neo-Arabic style and used for the storage of resale grain. The first historical references date from the mid-fourteenth century.
It underwent several renovations until (Phone number hidden by Airbnb) when it was severely damaged by the earthquake. The current structure dates from (Phone number hidden by Airbnb) when it became an electricity plant. It is owned by the Levante Irrigation Company and was in use until (Phone number hidden by Airbnb)
Gates and electric tractions lift for irrigation
Canal gates and an electric traction lift built in the early 20th century to capture and channel excess waters at the mouth of the River Segura. It was inaugurated by King Alfonso XIII, who was the company’s largest shareholder.
Iron Bridge
It was built in the (Phone number hidden by Airbnb) s. It replaced an older Baroque style stone bridge. It is a good example of engineering with iron, a late consequence of the Industrial Revolution.
The dry river Waterwhell
It is a water drawn lifting waterwheel from wells known as corona (crown). It has two wheels: the water wheel and the air wheel or anti-wheel. It has been restored and is exposed in a public garden space walking down towards the Reina Sofia Park on “Enginyer Mira Street”.
Saint James the apostle parish church
It was designed by Engineer Larramendi, author of the new Guardamar Town Plan and built after the (Phone number hidden by Airbnb) earthquake. It is a neoclassical building of three naves and the original project was left unfinished, in which its high tower stands on the door access and a polygonal apse, on the non built cruise.
There are a few items salvaged from the old parish church on top of the hill such as some paintings, silverware and sculptures including the carvings of Saint James the Pilgrim and Our Lady of the Rosary.
La Rábita Califal
The Islamic Caliphate Rabita or Monastery of Guardamar del Segura is the only monastic Islamic monument from the Umayyad Andalusian period (X-XI century A.D) preserved almost completely since it remained buried by the sand dunes for many centuries.
It consists of 22 praying cells, with its own Mihrab, organised around two main streets. In this monastery you would have found both religious men, the faithful who stayed here and pilgrims performing the Ribat. They were all attracted by the spiritual retreat required by Islam to its followers.
The Phoenician port city of la Fonteta
This heritage site has been declared of High Cultural Interest. It is made up of an urban colonial Phoenician factory (s. VIII-VI B.C.) It was covered by the dunes and the excavations have only uncovered a very small part of the port. It can be seen next to the Islamic Caliphate Rabita or Monastery. Archaeological excavations have documented a monumental wall with bastions along a perimeter road. There are townhouses in its inner side and quarters also existed outside the wall organised in fortified houses.
This is one of the most complex and best preserved cities in the Phoenician world.
The little phoenician fort known as the “Cabeçó de L’estany”
It is a small core fort of Phoenician origin (s. VIII-VII a. C.) located on the right bank of the River Segura, about 2 km west of Guardamar town. The defensive system consists of a powerful and singular wall with bastions in projection and an interior structure of "bunkers". Inside the walls there were angular houses with different rooms where household and craft activities were carried out. We must highlight the metal production carried out here.
Roman and Islamic factory on the Montcaio Hill
These are settlements with various construction phases of Roman times (I-IV centuries A.D). It is a set of Roman and late Roman constructions related to a coastal settlement where marine resources were exploited such as: fisheries, salt and derivatives.
Crowning the archaeological sequence of the site there is an Islamic Caliphate Rabita or Monastery from the Taifa period ( X-XI centuries A.D). The structure excavated is composed of a cell containing an oratory Quibla wall with its Mihrab. The fact the Rábita is so near the shore explains how important the Mediterranean coastline was for the Islamic Hispanic mediaeval communities.
The Lady of Guardamar
“La Dama de Guardamar” was discovered on Septemb (Phone number hidden by Airbnb) in the nearby archaeological site of Cabeço Lucero. A large piece of a stone wheel was the first fragment found of an Iberian lady’s bust, with clothing similar to the one worn by the “Dama d’Elx or Elche”. The excavation provided many more items, including a large fragment comprising the headdress, face and neck. Unfortunately, the sculpture was found in pieces since it had been hammered and even suffered from fire.
It was taken to the laboratory of the Archaeological Museum of Alicante where restorer Vicente Bernabeu began washing and identifying the remains. A piece appeared with its chin, the other with the lips, although the lower right one had been eroded. Pieces were also found of the breast and collars, and many other pieces of stone belonging to the work, that did not fit with each other nor did they have any carved surface. The task was a delicate and painstaking restoration, lasting from October (Phone number hidden by Airbnb) to June (Phone number hidden by Airbnb) , when it was completed.
Vicente Bernabeu’s restorer expertise and artistic ability managed to bring back to life a piece of extremely difficult recovery. Now, even with what it lacks, it shows us its beauty as it must have been straight out of the sculptor’s hands 2,500 years ago.
Other items of interest
There are other interesting pieces that are part of our archaeological and visual heritage. The most important would be the town and the necropolis of Cabeço Lucero from the Iberian period (V-III centuries B.C), the remains of the tower to unload salt (X-XI centuries A.D and XVIII century A.D), the American Communication Tower on top of Montcaio Hill (Phone number hidden by Airbnb) or the Forest House and nurseries within the pine forest near Vivers Beach. Finally it should be noted that after the earthquake of (Phone number hidden by Airbnb) , engineer José Agustín de Larramendi drew a new neoclassical Town Plan on the plain, constituting an early model of earthquake architecture of great interest
